AS*US	Jul 2 2008 7:29 PM Altered States: Indigenous Australian and Chinese Diasporic Alliances Dr Peta Stephenson, The Australian Centre, University of Melbourne p.stephenson@unimelb.edu.au This paper examines the forging of new cross-cultural partnerships between Chinese diasporic and Indigenous communities in Australia. It shows that such strategic alliances create multinational cohorts of a different kind from the transnational corporations usually associated with globalisation. While this new international networking is clearly a by-product of the changing labour and capital patterns that have emerged through the internationalisation of world markets, its importance is rarely acknowledged in discourse on globalisation. The paper argues that the overemphasis on commercial developments and innovations in technology is made at the expense of recognising the equally important and innovative cross-national alliances being forged at the community level. Such partnerships are not only evidence that the ramifications of globalisation extend beyond transnational financial and commercial developments, they also challenge our understandings of the nation-state. Beyond attesting to the agency of these communities, Indigenous/Chinese cultural, political and emotional unions destabilise the notion that cultural identity is a function of the nation-state. Supra-national networks of meeting between Indigenous and Chinese diasporic communities are being forged outside any state apparatus, necessitating alternative imaginings of nation. Indeed, new forms of hybrid cross-cultural communities that pay little heed to national borders and geographical boundaries contest the very viability of the nation-state as an entity. The paper shows that Australian Indigenous and Chinese diasporic communities are making use of new communication technologies and other tools of globalism to undermine the sustaining myths of nationalism.
