The Metal Years ...................................................
What they've said about the new album so far ........................................................... ................................................................................................................................. “The Metal Years is more crowded, boundary-curious and fully conceived than most local albums this year.” MESS AND NOISE ........ "a triumph of craft... The Metal Years rewards from the first listen." **** ROLLING STONE ....... “…a very Australian blend of slacker rock and progressive guitar noise that sits El Mopa on the same shelf as Built to Spill or early Pavement. These songs are at once joyous and heartbroken, full of frenetic energy…” **** ALTERNATIVE MEDIA GROUP ....... “local slackers return with their masterpiece …. the drunk brass of 'Time Slides' makes it a classic-in-waiting” **** TIME OUT ........ “Wrapped in folk, country, indie and acoustica, [el Mopa] pull the sound off nicely with an array of complementary loops, brass, harmonica, cello and good ol’ fashioned guitar…” XPRESS .......................................................................................
The third album from Sydney four piece el Mopa has been described as ‘Sydney soul’. While the band endorses that description, we are all world citizens now, aren’t we? So it’s more than that – with touches of Akron / Animal Collective psych folk (“The Dead Certainty”) mariachi intensity (“What We’re Burning”) and roots tinged rock (“Dirty Old Town”) and even songs matching the title - the ’90s dinosaur stomp of “I See A Strobe” and the post-QOTSA stoner rock of “The Metal Years” ...........................................................................................................................
Back from the wilderness with a new lineup, El Mopa arises more powerful than ever, with three voices leading the chorus: founder Simon Wooldridge, guitarist Matthew J Toohey (Kid Cornered) and bassist producer Emma Hoy (PBC, the Bonettes, Bruce). Guests like Bree Van Reyk (Holly Throsby), Darren Hanlon and Penny McBride (the Cannanes) put them in good company. A long time in the making, and longer in the waiting, this is el Mopa’s musical values distilled to optimal 40 minute form ..............................................................................

This self titled work consists of two extended pieces recorded at MPS studio in 2007, hinged on deep electroacoustic explorations rich in gesture and texture.
From this distance, The New Weather is a fucking awesome album! I found it hard to appreciate it at the time, after being a part of it, but the songs are so good and the drumming passable. It's on my travelling ipod. Can't wait for the new album.
