  • Bio

Elphida Trio is a new band on the Edmonton jazz scene. Although they have been playing together in different bands for over seven years, it is only in the past three that they have taken to the streets as a jazz and funk trio. With their rambunctious compositions and big sound they are a crowd-pleasing spectacle that just keeps getting better. Having performed at many concerts and events as background music, Elphida Trio began looking for opportunities to perform for a crowd. To accomplish this they started playing open-mics at local venues and through personal contacts played at larger functions as the primary entertainment. They also took a break from performing in November and December of 2008 to write some original compositions and have been playing those for audiences with great success. With the preliminary trappings of a brand-new band they started doing small café shows and playing at fundraisers for various organizations. At these smaller shows they gained some notoriety and were invited to play at larger functions and shows. They continue to play shows and have just recently finished their debut EP, Solve for X, which will be released on February 18th 2010. Having played in a church band since junior high, the members of Elphida Trio became the house band for a high school youth program called Young life in 2007. This had them learning new songs week after week with as little rehearsal time as an hour. Seeing they could learn shots and breaks in such a short time, as well as read each other when playing improvised intro and outro music, they realized that their was potential to take their show on the road. To do this they needed a name and an image. During one of those intense discussions in which musicians often find themselves, the members of this jazz trio decided that their music should bring hope to people. They looked up some different words to convey that message. They settled on Elphida, a Greek word meaning just that. Unfortunately, they had already advertised their name extensively before discovering that they had misspelled the actual word, "Elpida". But as studious jazz musicians, they embraced their mistake and called it "an embellishment". With their second year together coming to a close, Elphida Trio look forward to the continued growth of their musical career. Writing new songs, performing and entertaining new audiences and creating a new musical experience each time they get together, Elphida Trio now wants to take that fun and enjoyment that players have on stage and put it on record. You can be sure that where the music is swinging hard and the beat is grooving, Elphida Trio is there. Elphida Trio wishes you a great day, a fabulous life, and bids you sit and take in some quality music. Enjoy!

Elphida Trio is a new band on the Edmonton music scene. Although they have been playing together in different bands for over seven years, it is only in the past three that they have taken to the streets as a jazz and funk trio. With their rambunctious compositions and big sound, they are a crowd-pleasing spectacle that just keeps getting better.

Having played in a church band since junior high, the members of Elphida Trio became the house band for a high school youth program called Young life in 2007. This had them learning new songs week after week with as little rehearsal time as a half hour. The group became more and more cohesive, and was praised by their weekly audience. The trio realized their potential to bring their show outside of the club walls. Basing their name off a derivative of the Greek word “Elpida”, meaning “hope”, the three gentlemen formed Elphida Trio in January 2008.

They started playing open-mics at local venues, and through personal contacts played at larger functions as the primary entertainment. They started out as a traditional Jazz group, but dabbled in Funk and Fusion, and explored new genres including R&B, Soul, Reggae and Rock. They began to develop original compositions, which were well received by their audiences. In July 2010, they began plans for a recording of their original music. They recorded at DanLyn studios in October 2010, and released their debut EP, Solve for X, on February 18th 2011.

With their third year together at a close, Elphida Trio look forward to the continued growth of their musical career. They seek to write original music, entertain new audiences and create a fresh musical experience each time they get together. You can be sure that where the music is swinging hard and the beat is grooving, Elphida Trio is there.

Elphida Trio wishes you a great day, a fabulous life, and bids you sit and take in some quality music. Enjoy!
