MÚSICA EN EL RINCóN, June 2009
Tel; 0117-9393457
El Rincon is a uniquely intimate little slice of Spain in the heart of South Bristol. It’s small on space, but huge on atmosphere: get there early! All gigs are free entry, and begin at 8pm.
Friday September 4th
CATHY JONES BOSSA (guaranteed late summer sunshine)
Classy bossa-novas with an authentic Brazilian feel, performed by two of the southwest’s finest exponents, and favourites of ours:
Cathy Jones (vocals and percussion) has played with Bem Bom, Sirius B, and the much-missed Zumbida, and is joined by the mellifluous Tristram Cox on guitar. www.myspace.com/cathyjonesquartet.
Thursday September 10th
SPECIAL ONE-OFF: WHALEBONE POLLY + François
Yes! That’s right! The legendary Whalebone Polly, at El Rincón! On a Thursday! Kate Stables and Rachael Dadd are back together at last, with their exquisite vocal harmonies and spacious guitar-banjo/multi-instrumental arrangements, and a new CD to launch. Radio One are fans. And so will you be if you get there early enough to squeeze in. And there’s support from the equally legendary François, of Atlas Mountains fame. Don’t miss. www.myspace.com/whalebonepolly.
Friday September 11th
ACUSTICA (masterful Latin-Spanish fusion)
This should be a perfect fit of venue and musicians. The voices and guitars of Pete Airey and Nick Roll in a Latin-Spanish fusion that mixes originals with Brazilian bossas, rumba flamenco, and Cuban ‘son’. Don’t be fooled by the less than Hispanic names: Acustica really know their cebollas. www.myspace.com/acusticaduo.
Friday September 18th
KEVIN BYRNE & CUFFY (El Rincón’s favourite flamenco maestros)
Bristol’s flamenco guitar dream-team: the burning intensity of Kevin Byrne, and the joyful dexterity of Cuffy. Favourites at El Rincon, and members of top local bands like Calima, Up Bustle & Out, & the Robado Quartet, they are legendary for their authority, virtuosity and unbridled ‘duende’. Great original compositions too. Muy muy bien.

JULIAN ROWLANDS (a rare sighting of the shy but devilish bandoneón)
"Lastima, bandoneón, mi corazón / tu ronca maldición maleva"
("my heart, bandoneón, is hurt by your maliciously groaning curse") - thus Catulo Castillo describes the uncanny sound of the strange instrument that is the heart and soul of the tango. Originating in Germany, this overgrown, and fiendishly difficult, concertina found its home on the river plate. Julian Rowlands, bandoneonist with Tango Siempre, will tame this beautiful beast with tangos, valses, milongas, chamames and more. Magnificent. www.bandoneon.co.uk.
