From the very beginning, the heart of El Teatro Campesino has been its music--the songs, the corridos, the cries of anguish and happiness of a working people.
Born on the picket lines of the Delano Grape Strike in 1965, “El Teatro Campesino” is a bi-lingual farm workers theater devoted to social change. We are a poor people’s theater realized with sweat, faith, love and sense of humor.
Our first album, Huelga En General, was entirely produced in our recording studio in San Juan Bautista, California. It is a record, a document, a joyful harvest of the courage, fears, tears and laughter of our United Farm Workers Union. It is the unconquered heart of our people after more than a decade of struggle in the fields and cities of America. Viva La Causa!
Daniel Valdez'Mestizo Daniel Valdez's music has received wide recognition over the past three decades.
In 1966, Daniel joined Cesar Chavez's United Farm Workers Union where, on the picket lines, he learned to perform improvisational theatre. As one of the founding members of El Teatro Campesino (ETC), he added his music to the UFW's message of social justice for farm workers.
1998 marked the 25th anniversary of the recording of Daniel Valdez' "MESTIZO". It was his first solo album which propelled him into the world of concert performer. He has performed with many musical artists, such as Carlos Santana, Jerry Garcia, Ruben Blades, Celia Cruz, and Tito Puente. He was the romantic lead opposite Linda Ronstadt in her stage production of "CANCIONES DE MI PADRE".
The Cisco Kid (1994)La Pastorela (1991)
El Teatro Campesino is proud to present to you this contemporary adaptation of La Pastorela created for the PBS Great Performances series.
It stars Linda Rondstadt, Paul Rodriguez, Cheech Marin, and members of El Teatro Campesino in a delightful and amusing performance of the ageless pastoral theme as seen through the eyes of a young daughter of farm workers.
Corridos: Tales of Passion & Revolution (1987)La Bamba (1987)
Rock 'n Roll biopic on the life of Ritchie Valens, a young Mexican/American whose talents as a rock and roll singer catapulted him from the obscurity of a farm laborer obsessed with music to stardom at the age of seventeen with a string of pop hits still popular today.
Starring Lou Diamond Phillips as Ritchie and an excellent Esai Morales as his brother Bob, with whom he had a loving but tempestuous relationship.
Written and directed by Luis Valdez.
Zoot Suit (1982) Part fascinating fact, part dazzling film fiction, Zoot Suit is the blistering film adaptation of playwright Luis Valdez' critically acclaimed stage drama based on the "zoot suit riots" that rocked 1940s Los Angeles.
When barrio leader Henry Reyna (Daniel Valadez) and a group of his friends are unjustly convicted on circumstantial evidence and sent to San Quentin, activist lawyers Alice Bloomfield (Tyne Daly) and George Shearer (Charles Aidman) fight the blatant racially motivated miscarriage of justice to win Henry and his friends their freedom.
Featurning Edward James Olmos (as the mythical "Pachuco") in the role that catapulted him to stardom, Zoot Suit is a scorchingly searing and seductively provocative work that skillfully blends action, drama, romance and music!
Mummified Deer and Other Plays (2005) Mummified Deer is Luis Valdez’s mature exploration of the Yaqui Indian roots of Mexican-American culture and Valdez’s own family.
Returning to the format of the tent show, Valdez mines maternal psychology and Yaqui mysticism to demand that characters scale the full gamut of emotions. In this gut-wrenching piece, Mama Chu is the dominant, imposing figure who must reconcile the present with the past and unify the conflicting histories and identities of her family.
Mundo Mata is the long-awaited drama of unionizing farm workers battling the agribusiness power structure in California in a time when Mexican Americans are being sent off to battle brown-skinned enemies in Vietnam. Valdez assesses the toll that families have to pay to remain united against divisive forces. It all comes down to Reymundo, the antihero, who in the end must weigh existential and political questions.
The Shrunken Head of Pancho Villa, Valdez's re-worked first play, still holds all the vision, spunk, and innovation of the young playwright. Injecting black humor into domestic drama, disassembled heads talk, mothers exchange roles with the patriarch, Pachucos banter, and sell-outs become the mouthpieces for an oppressed community.
Zoot Suit and Other Plays (1992) This collection contains three of playwright and screenwriter Luis Valdez' most important and recognized plays: Zoot Suit, Bandido and I Don't Have to Show You No Stinking Badges.
The anthology also includes an introduction by noted theater critic Dr. Jorge Huerta of the University of California at San Diego.

Я хочу найти: We have always believed that community is the creator of theater, and that theater is the creator of community. In that spirit we are inviting you to join us as a valued member of our
creative community.
As artistic director and founder of El Teatro Campesino, which was born on the picket lines of the Delano Grape Strike with Ceasar Chavez in 1965, I welcome your membership.
As one of the grandfathers of modern Latino Theater in America, El Teatro Campesino is known around the world as a Vibrant Theater!
Our company is largely self-supporting, without city, county, state or federal grants.
This year we are again embarking on a membership campaign. Due to the lack of grants and monies to fund cultural arts organizations in our area, we find ourselves perilously close to being unable to provide the plays you have come to know and love. And so we are asking you to help continue the legacy. Where farm workers once packed fruit, El Teatro Campesino now packs dreams. Join us in celebrating our 43nd year and become a member of El Teatro Campesino. --Luis Valdez
