I love being who I am. I just happen to be gay. I'm a very good person. I give back. I've made mistakes. I love other people. I want the world to be a positive place. Stop hating me, stop hating me, stop treating me like some fucking thing from Mars, I'm a human being.

    ..Jewel..

Jewel has been one of my favourite artists since I was 15. I find personal meaning in so many of her lyrics... she expresses the things I felt and feel, and I never get tired of listening. I also admire her as a poet and social activist.

Click here to see me playing the drums to Again and Again, from Goodbye Alice in Wonderland.

    ..Rush..

Rush is one of the first bands I listened to with my best friend, who has since passed on. Some people speculate that Rush is an Objectivist-oriented band; I am not convinced of that, but I do find their music in sync with my individualist spirit. Their song "Anthem" may or may not be a tribute to one of my favourite books...

    ..Mandy Patinkin..

Mandy Patinkin is, of course, one of my heroes. He also is a talented singer, and a lot of fun to watch in concert because of his energy.

What a beautiful song... unrequited love knows no gender boundaries...

  • Movies

    ..Dead Poets Society..
    "Make your lives extraordinary."

My favorite movie since I was 13. Although plot development is somewhat weak in retrospect, I still love this movie for its individualist spirit.

    ..Garden State..
"Maybe that's all family really is. A group of people who miss the same imaginary place."

Zach Braff's writing/directorial debut. This movie has a literary feel because of its non-traditional storytelling method and main characters.

    ..The Lonely Guy..
"Lonely guys don't stay lonely forever."

A surrealist Steve Martin comedy that hits just the right balance between strangeness and pathos, as a recently cuckolded greeting card writer tries to find his way through the world of lonely people.

  • Television

    ..Scrubs..

A somewhat surreal but ultimately touching comedy about life within Sacred Heart hospital, shown mainly through the eyes of the intern/resident John "JD" Dorian.

Here's a life lesson from Scrubs:

    Monk

Obsessive-compulsive (and possibly Aspie) detective Adrian Monk can solve any crime in the world due to noticing details others miss... except for his wife Trudy's murder.

There aren't a whole lot of Monk clips available, but here's one:

  • Books

    ..My books..

..Winter's Silence.., written by Stephanie Silberstein, with cover art/layout by David G. Chayim and photography by Shoshannah Stone.

    Childhood isn't easy...

Six-year-old Emily Horowitz faces anti-Semitism on her own during Christmastime while her parents focus on her newly-diagnosed autistic younger brother.

Shades of Gay (coming June 28, 2010)

Arthur Jensen thinks he is comfortable with his gayness. A straight-arrow, straight-A student, he keeps who he is to himself. But all that is about to change as he begins senior year with his gorgeous new neighbor. When Arthur decides to make his relationship with Mitch public, he discovers just how cruel small town teenagers can be...

    ..Favorites..

    ..The Holy Bible..
"Hypocrites! ...you ignore the important things of the law--justice, mercy, and faith."

The Bible is, of course, our spiritual manual. In the beginning, the Jewish people were taught to follow God's commandments literally... then with the coming of Jesus, a new covenant was created, releasing human beings from the need for perfection.

    ..Anthem..
"This, my body and spirit, this is the end of the quest."

An allegory about one man's search for acceptance, ending in the embracement of his identity, freedom, and life. The most spiritual and fulfilling of Rand's four novels.

    ..Anna Karenina..
"Happy families are all alike, but every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."

Tolstoy's masterpiece about love, seduction, and betrayal in pre-Communist Russia. Masterful in its illustration of disillusionment and spiritual emptiness.

..Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix..
"...we are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided. Lord Voldemort's gift for spreading discord and enmity is very great. We can fight it only by showing an equally strong bond of friendship and trust."

The best of the Harry Potter books, in my opinion. It deals directly with the connection between spreading lies and the desire to control.

  • Heroes

    ..J.K Rowling..:
Ms. Rowling is, of course, the author of the Harry Potter books. I admire her both because she is a successful writer and because of her humility.

Before achieving worldwide success and fame, Ms. Rowling lived in poverty with her daughter, often struggling to afford food for the week. She did not expect anything more than a couple of good reviews when she published Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

I've learned quite a bit about writing, as well as about perserverance, by reading Ms. Rowling's interviews. I'm experimenting with planning my work rather than jumping right into it, as a result of reading about the way she planned the Harry Potter series.

    ..Mandy Patinkin..:

Where to begin? Mr. Patinkin has been my absolute hero since I was sixteen years old. I really appreciate his openness about his personal life in his interviews... his words have gotten me through some difficult times. I also admire his talent as an actor and singer.

About me:

I am: INFP - The Harmonizer, Clarifier

Introverted Intuition, Extroverted Ethics

I have a very internal focus. I think I look at myself through other people’s eyes, but sometimes I can lose touch with how things work for me. Then I can get introspective, going very deep and staying there, not coming out too quickly or easily. Somehow I find it very difficult to put into words and communicate the things that really matter to me. Most people don’t have the foggiest notion about what goes on with me.....

I like harmony and seek consensus and do well with the deep issues. My values and the things that are important to me often feel outside the mainstream in the sense that I feel impinged upon and uncomfortable with so much of what goes on. I’m too private to push my values on to other people, but I am convinced that one ought to be congruent in their own life if they are going to expect congruence from others. In a sense I hold other people to that standard, and I worry about my own incongruities, inconsistencies, and contradictions. Groups can be hard. I can put myself in the group process so rapidly and so completely, and it’s important not to get sucked in. I need to be predictable about what I believe.....

The voice of Stephanie Silberstein is a once in a generation phenomenon, never to be forgotten." - Donald Freed, Every Third House

Isolation. Prejudice. Loss.

Stephanie Silberstein not only writes about heartbreak--she's lived it. She grew up as the only Jewish child in her neighborhood, enduring covert anti-Semitism during the annual Christmas concert and the occasional openly prejudiced remark. Her experiences were the basis of her first novel, Winter's Silence, which came out in 2008.

Ms. Silberstein escaped the suburbs in 1998, landing in Los Angeles. While she was studying to get her MFA, she lived with, and fell for, a recovering alcoholic and addict. She left years of poverty and heartbreak behind in 2006, heading back east to a new life in North Carolina. Shortly after her arrival there, her friend died of a drug-induced heart attack.

Despite these setbacks, Ms. Silberstein continually moves forward, embracing the Jewish notion of "Tikkun Olam" (heal the world). She is passionate about GLBT rights as well as the rights of disabled children. She is writing a second novel, Shades of Gay, in order to illustrate the way non-heterosexuals are treated in small town America.

Ms. Silberstein owns her own publishing company, Narrow Path Publishing, along with her two best friends. Together they are demonstrating that "there is enough room in this world for everybody to be successful."

It was now or never, and the idea of never hurt too much.......

For Arthur Jensen, being gay wasn’t a big deal. He secretly lusted after guys, keeping his sexual orientation to himself.

Then Mitch moved in next door. Handsome, muscular, and… bisexual, he quickly became Arthur’s latest dream guy. This time, though, things were different. Arthur decided to pursue Mitch. At first they kept their relationship to themselves, making out in bathrooms and keeping their distance at school. Soon that wasn’t enough for Arthur anymore.

When Arthur and Mitch made their relationship public, the other kids turned on them in ways the boys never expected.

They just wanted to be happy… That was their “sin”.

SHADES OF GAY

COMING JUNE 2010

Who I'd like to meet:

The one I know G-d has in store for me... she's* unlikely to be from Dunn, but that's okay, because this town is too small to hold me... I'm going places in my life and I want her along for the ride!

She's not only my equal in every way: physically, mentally, spiritually; but s/he complements me perfectly. She's strong where I am weak and vice versa so that together we form a perfect whole, as G-d intended us to be...

She is Jewish... hopefully she knows Messiah, but as long as we can walk the same spiritual path together it doesn't matter...

Her spirit is limited by nothing... she hungers for all people to be free to live happily here on Earth, regardless of the gender of the people they choose to love!!! She not only talks about freedom, but is ready and willing to live it, for herself and for all those whose lives she is meant to touch.

* Right now I'm mainly looking to date another woman, but I'm interested in the content of people's spirits, not their genitalia. I am asexual/biromantic--I'm purely interested in a relationship, no interest in sex at this time. I identify on myspace as bisexual because it's closest to what I am, even though it doesn't exactly fit.

A.K.A "The Dork"

Hello? Yoo-hoo! Hi! Say, have you been tested for Attention Deficit Disorder? You've got your head in the clouds, my friend, but it helps make you a more interesting person. Your friends may think you're a bit of a dork, and you may make the wrong decisions on occasion, but you're a sweet, happy person who's on the right track in life. You may want to hire a bodyguard, though...you're the type to attract stalkers.
