Long paths tend to be exhausting and strenuous, but at the same time extended journeys give us an opportunity to reflect, arrive at decisions and leave old routines behind. The Southern German act, EMIL BULLS, who despite their tender age are already considered a musical institution among German rock bands of international standing, embarked on this path, which they like to refer to as the "black path"; after all the world of EMIL BULLS is honest and emotional.
Following four successful studio albums, their surprising acoustic cut, The Life Acoustic, a subsequent sold-out club tour and countless shows all over Germany, its neighbouring countries and the US, the time had come in spring 2007 for Christoph, Chrissy, Stephan, Fabian and James to give their band history a new direction.
They ensconced themselves in a cabin somewhere in the Allgäu mountains, a long way away from the distractions and blessings of civilisation. The landscape can be enchantingly beautiful there, but also threateningly dark and awe-inspiring. The forests and mountain tops can seem bizarre and unreal in bad weather and easily wear you down. The quintet spent night-long sessions in the cabin's snuggery, which they had cleared of all furniture, letting their ideas run riot. Inspired by the rain which lashed against the window panes and the thunderstorms which were caught between the mountains and clenched their fists with rolling thunder, riffs and melodies for the new album erupted. And the band really didn't care how this inferno would go down with the outside world. For three weeks, they turned the nights into day, always driven by a spring which featured extremely moderate weather. With over 20 numbers under their belt, they returned to Munich, where they immediately set about recording a demo with the support of engineer and sound mixer Jakob "JDAWG", putting together the basic framework for THE BLACK PATH. It took them a while to restrain the tracks' sheer riff power and summarise their ideas in 14 songs.
As embarking on new paths is part of EMIL BULLS' band philosophy, they decided not to rely on the usual suspects when it came to choosing a producer for their album, but met up with Benny Richter, a young and talented composer, musician and producer who has worked with acts such as Caliban and Krypteria. He proved to be highly impressed with the Bulls' attitude and joined them on their journey. Having completed the team, the exceptional engineer Jakob "JDAWG" Bernhart took care of the sound, leaving Benny to concentrate on musical concerns, which proved an extremely fruitful approach. The musicians proceeded to commute between the Horus studios in Hanover and Benny's own Butterfly Studio in Mülheim/Ruhr, polishing the new album. The riffs became ever more brutal, the melodies more iridescent than they had already been in typical EMIL BULLS style, and the atmosphere of the songwriting sessions and the impressions from the long and strenuous path were put down on record for eternity.

Waste your time looking for the right pigeonhole if you must, THE BLACK PATH reflects this band's soul, it's emotional, independent, angry, anthemnic, merciless, poignant, liberating and basically honest and genuine. Which at the end of the day convinced the recordlabel, Drakkar, who soon discovered that EMIL BULLS 2008 have left the hype of their previous albums behind, having found their own direction on a musical as well as on a personal level.

Lange Wege sind meistens beschwerlich und anstrengend, doch hat man auf langen Reisen immer sehr viel Zeit nachzudenken, Entschlüsse zu fassen und auch alte Pfade hinter sich zu lassen. Die süddeutsche Formation EMIL BULLS, die trotz ihres jugendlichen Alters schon fast als musikalische Institution deutscher Rockbands mit internationalem Format gilt, ging diesen Pfad, den wie sie es nennt „schwarzen Pfad", denn die Welt der EMIL BULLS ist ehrlich und emotional geprägt.
Nach vier erfolgreichen Studio-Alben, einer überraschenden Akustik-Platte - The Life Acoustic - mit anschließender ausverkaufter Clubtournee und unzähligen Konzerten quer durch die Republik, Nachbarländer und die USA, war für Christoph, Chrissy, Stephan, Fabian und James im Frühjahr 2007 die Zeit gekommen, einen neuen Weg in der Bandhistorie einzuschlagen.
Irgendwo im Allgäu verschanzte sich die Band auf einer Hütte, weitab jeglicher Ablenkung und Zivilisation. Die Gegend dort kann wunderschön, aber auch bedrohlich dunkel und mächtig wirken. Die Wälder und Berggipfel erscheinen bei schlechterer Wetterlage sehr bizarr und unwirklich und können schnell aufs Gemüt schlagen. In nächtelangen Sessions in der ausgeräumten Stube der Hütte, saßen die Fünf dort und ließen ihren Ideen freien Lauf. Inspiriert vom Regen der an die Scheiben peitschte und den Gewittern zwischen den Bergen, die mit Donnergrollen die Fäuste ballten, brachen die Riffs und Melodien der neuen Platte hervor. Dabei war es der Band schlichtweg egal, wie dieses Inferno draußen ankommen wird. Drei Wochen schlugen sie sich die Nächte um die Ohren, immer wieder neu angetrieben von einem wettertechnisch mäßigen Frühling. Mit Ideen für über 20 Stücke wurde die Heimreise nach München angetreten um dort sogleich in die Demo-Produktion mit Engineer und Mixer Jakob „JDAWG" Bernhart zu gehen und das Grundgerüst von THE BLACK PATH zusammenzustellen. Es dauerte ein Weilchen bis man die Riffgewalt gebändigt hatte und die Ideen schließlich auf 14 Stücke zusammenfasste.
Da das beschreiten neuer Wege bei den EMIL BULLS zur Bandphilosophie gehört, entschied man sich für die Produktion nicht auf die üblichen Verdächtigen Produzenten zuzugreifen, sondern traf sich mit Benny Richter, einem jungen, talentierten Komponisten, Musiker und Produzent, der bislang Bands wie Caliban und Krypteria unter die Arme griff. Dieser war schnell angetan von der Bull'schen Philosophie und ging mit auf die Reise. Somit war das Team gefunden, Ausnahme-Engineer Jakob „JDAWG" Bernhart sorgte für den Sound und Benny kümmerte sich ausschließlich um musikalische Belange, was sich als sehr fruchtbar herausstellte. Zwischen dem Horus-Studio in Hannover und Bennys eigenem Butterfly Studio in Mülheim/Ruhr pendelnd, feilten die sieben Männer an der neuen Platte. Riffs wurden brachialer und Melodien noch schillernder, als sie es in typischer EMIL BULLS-Manier sowieso schon taten, um die Stimmung der Songwriting-Sessions, und die Eindrücke des langen, unbequemen Weges bis zu fertigen Platte musikalisch zu verewigen.
Das Ergebnis haltet ihr nun in den Händen, EMIL BULLS pur. Zieht Schubladen wo ihr wollt, THE BLACK PATH spiegelt die Seele der Band wieder, emotional, eigenständig, wütend, hymnisch, erbarmungslos, pathetisch, befreiend und von grundauf ehrlich und aufrichtig. Das überzeugte letztendlich auch die Plattenfirma Drakkar, die schnell merkte, dass EMIL BULLS 2008 den Hype vorhergehender Alben hinter sich gelassen haben und sowohl musikalisch als auch persönlich einen eigenen Weg fanden.

Danke! für den geilen abschluss des Reloads ihr habt mich echt nicht enttäuscht, obwohl ich gehofft habe, das ein bisschen mehr publikum da ist... war wohl einfach zu früh -.- es war aber trotzdem ein spitzenauftritt, hoffe ihr hattet spaß ;) kommt mal wieder in die gegend, ich bin dann auf jeden fall dabei =)
