........................ .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. Emil Hess (b. April 16th 1965 ) is a Danish saxophone/clarinet player and composer based in Copenhagen . He leads Emil Hess Nonet and Emil Hess quartet. He regularly plays in New York City where he is leading the group Hess/Huntley together with the American drummer Richard Livingston Huntley. He also co-leads the ToneArtensemble and the Scandinavian Jazz Quartet the Saxophone Quartet United Notions and the Hess Dayyani trio with his brother Nikolaj Hess and singer Camilla Dayyani. E. Hess has composed for and played many constellations. He has received several composers Awards from the Danish Art Society. He has composed 135 compositions for small groups and larger ensembles and film productions. He has played with Mulgrew Miller, Cameron Brown, Lars Jansson, Dave Ballou, Thomas Clausen , Jan Kaspersen , Jacob Fisher, Søren Lee , Klüvers Big Band , Ted Curson, Bill Dobbins and Carmen Bradford. He currently plays with Hess/Huntley,Emil Hess Nonet and Emil Hess quartet, Hess Dayyani, ToneARt Ensemble, the Saxophone Quartet United Notions, Scandinavian Jazz Quartet, different Big Bands, Lee/Illsøe, the duo Danish Songs and plays with/composes for different projects in the Copenhagen-based composers association ToneArt. During his career E. Hess has played at many clubs and festivals in Scandinavia , USA , Africa, China and most of Europe with appearances at e.g. Knitting Factory (NYC), Copenhagen Jazzfestval, and Beijing International Jazz Festival. E. Hess holds a Masters degree in music from Aarhus University . He has studied two years at Berklee College of Music in Boston and City College in New York . Influences
Mostly the American jazztradition and the nordic song tradition, but i listen to a wide range of music. Jazz, Classical music old and new, Funk, Rock, R&B, Brazilian, Indian, African and Afro Cuban music. Some of my favavorites are: John Coltrane, Charlie Parker,Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Joe Lovano, Mike Brecker, Jan Garbarek, Ornette Coleman, Gil Evans, Duke Ellington, Thad Jones, Jan Johansson, Bill Evans, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, J.S. Bach, Arvo Pärt, Monteverdi, Stranvinsky, Mozart, Debussy, Per Nørgaard, Hermeto Pascoal, Astor Piazzolla.
