In Juneau, Alaska, it rains 265 days a year. This ridiculously persistent precipitation creates the old growth Tongass National Forest, the largest block of temperate rain forest the world can still see today. Such weather makes for small towns, no roads out, access only by flight or ferry, and a vibrant annual folk festival. I suppose this is where I began my love affair with music...with sharing music.................
From the bony age of 8, I sang with my dad on stage. Bob Dylan, Arlow Guthrie, Donovan, Carol King, Joni Mitchell. Songs of my fathers generation were gifted to me like an old pocket watch or leather satchel.................
While the world danced to Material Girl adorned with jelly bracelets, I without T.V. Spent the 80s playing Capture the Flag and singing Creedence Clearwater songs with my dad. Folk festivals engender the members of a community to come together and share their music, their stories, share their lives. This has stayed with me from the beginning................
Ive had the opportunity to open for blues musician Taj Mahal on National Public Radio. I played various venues and festivals all across Alaska, worked as an environmental activist in the North West and D.C. for a stint..... Protect the Arctic Refuge from Oil and gas development!!! ...moved to Oregon to enjoy a brief recording interlude with musician Steve Pile, took some time to travel alone in Italy, Greece, Turkey, Syria...............
Ready to return to music I relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana in search of smooth funky sounds, soul singers, jazz cats- ( American Music in its rightful birthplace.) New Orleans was good to me. Gigged regularly at Phil Melancons Neutral Ground, made a new home for my heart under the Cypress Trees, the thick sultry heat. The south. Acquired a degree in Music Therapy from Loyola, discovered my love for Opera and really learned what singing can be. Immersed in the classical realm, Ive enjoyed performing with such stellar singers as tenor Bryan Hymel, soprano Megan Bloebaum, and New Orleans own extraordinaire on keys; Ulrike Masakowski..............
Other performance and recording projects with artists David Gray, VJ Hyde, Dave Mahoney, Buddy Francioni and the funky brass combo, Dr. Bone & the Hepcats..............
My most recent and proudest accomplishment, however, is the birth of my new baby daughter, Ruby Sunshine - who fills my days with light and love! This project is unique to anything else I have recorded in the past. So it is with great inspiration, tenderness and joy that I am compiling this debut album - FIRST GLANCE.................
