Emma Payn has quietly been making a name for herself over the last year in the UK and on first listen it’s clear to see why the singer songwriter has been doing so. An appearance at Radio One’s Fringe Festival put her on the radar and her star seems to be shining bright.
There is a definite hint of Carole King in some of her tracks like 'Arithmetic' and 'Trouble”'in the way that the mellow groove takes you on a journey that her lyrics map out for you. She writes the kind of lyrics that everyone will relate to but for different reasons and that in today’s pre-packed music scene that is a rare thing.
There are no overly long sing along chorus’ as such but instead we are gifted an insight into our own thoughts on life and everything in it.
Other influences I can pick out from her style are Beth Orton, Counting Crows, Susan Vega, and Lindsey Buckingham especially in tracks like the rockier 'Burning'. I think this diversity shows her skills as a songwriter and her guitar and piano playing help bring her lyrics to life. She also shows she is not above reworking the odd song with Lady Gaga’s 'Poker Face' appearing in her set recently.
In October 2008 she released her debut EP ''Uncontrollable Thoughts of Demons' to rave reviews and with gigs lining up across the south and afar Emma Payn is definitely an act worth checking out.

Talons, On Histories of Rosenberg, Run WALK!, Muddy Miles + Emma Payn @ The Joiners, 12th August 2009.
Upon hitting the Joiners I caught up with Rob and his ever growing collection of cameras, purchased a beer and was ready for the first act of the night: Emma Payn. Now I was familiar with Emma’s work having recently written her mintroducing article . She had an evident fan base in the crowd that night and treated them to an awesome set that opened with 'Without You', then continued on with 'Burning', the awesome 'Arithmetic', and 'Changes'. Emma also dropped in her interpretation of 'Pokerface' which in all honesty shits on the original in my opinion and the crowd that night I think agree with me. We also were then treated to another Payn classic 'Trouble', then 'Take Her Down' before finishing on 'The Journey'. A solid set from Emma Payn that backed up the buzz she is creating.
