Hosting an Emmy Party:

Every September, everyone who’s anyone in Hollywood dresses to the nines and attends a Primetime Emmys Party. Want to host your own? Here are some ideas to get you started.

DRESS UP

Red carpet glamour is an absolute must. But dressing to impress doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. Hit your local thrift store for a formal gown and some funky costume jewelry. Or use sequins to embellish something in your closet. Guys, you can score a reasonably priced tuxedo at the local thrift store, or rent one if you want to go all out. A suit or sport coat from your own closet will also get the point across just fine. The key is to make an effort. After all, this is the Emmys!!

EAT, DRINK & BE MERRY

Have plenty of finger foods on-hand; this is a long broadcast and your guests are bound to be hungry. Sandwich trays, fruit and vegetable platters, cheese and crackers, chips and salsa, cookies for desert. The fare doesn’t have to be fancy, but one way to dress things up is to use glassware, silverware and china instead of paper and plastic. Cocktail napkins instead of paper towels, and most of all, if you order pizzas, take them out of the boxes, cut them into smaller pieces and present them on serving trays!

DECOR IS KEY

Hit your local fabric store for a few yards of inexpensive red fabric and roll it out leading up to your front door. Make “Walk of Fame” stars out of construction paper or poster board, and use a marker to write in stars’ names. Balloons, confetti, metallic streamers all add to the festive atmosphere. Stick with “formal” colors: black and silver, or Emmy gold.

AND THE WINNER IS...

Print out a list of the nominees here (tip: copy and paste them into a text document), and make copies. Hand one to each of your guests and ask them to pick their favorite nominee in each category before the broadcast begins. Keep track of the winners during the show, and afterward, tally everyone’s “ballots” and award a prize to the guest who gets the most correct.
