Vegetarianism is a lifestyle. With my recent elimination of eggs from my diet, I am now a lactovegetarian. The evaluation of products has only become more thorough, but I am hoping to steadily become a vegan in the near future. Animals are the absolute innocents of the world and I believe it is my job as a human to protect this. I have a single-minded resolve to not eat the creatures I love, I wouldn't have it any other way. Once I resolve and set my mind on something, no obstacle can break my goal. My love for animals and dedication to vegetarianism is indestructible.

Middle school can be a daunting place for a 13 year old. It is here that so many of us are lost. However, as confused as I was during middle school, I was certain of one thing: I loved animals. From my elementary obsessions over pandas and lynxes to my cat best friend, Smokey, I was in love with anything animal-related. It was during the summer of seventh grade that I stumbled upon an online video of the bloody cruelties against chickens, cows and pigs in the United States. I was shocked by the gruesome images of innocent animals being slaughtered inhumanely. This made me question the fact that I ate these animals every day and I resolved to eliminate meat, poultry and fish from my diet and embrace a lifestyle of vegetarianism.
Growing up in a houseful of meat eaters is tough. My family can be ignorant about the subject. My father continuously asks me if I can eat chicken and my mother continuously refuses to accept that the vegetarian diet does not include fish. Eating out presents its own challenges. Anywhere I go to eat or shop, I must be aware of the means in which products are made. My favorite food is nachos however when I go out to restaurants, I am often left to say a full monologue to the waitress about my exclusions on the meal. The fashion world also leaves me with quite a burden, as almost every shoe is lined with some sort of 'leather'. In my life, I must carefully counteract the cruelties against animals in order to maintain my status of a vegetarian.

Creon believes that obedience should not only be to law for his son but as well to him, as a father. Creon's extreme view is that "...everything else shall be second to your father's decision..." in regards to Haemon. The role of gender can also be seen through Creon's views. Creon openly says to Haemon that "...we must support the cause of order, and in no wise suffer a woman to worst us. Better to fall from power, if we must, by a man's hand; then we should not be called weaker than a woman." Creon evidently sees men above women. Creon also has conflicting ideas of civil disobedience with Antigone. Creon is a strong believer of following rules, as they are, regardless of whether they are right or wrong. Creon has said that "disobedience is the worst of evils." In contrast, Antigone believes that law is not absolute and shall be broken down into civil disobedience. Antigone follows up to this belief with the burial of her brother.
Oedipus the King and Antigone are both strongly rooted plays by their writer Sophocles. Oedipus tells the story of man's unavoidable death and Antigone tells the story of gender roles, family importance and civil disobedience.

Human nature is evident in both of Sophocles' plays Oedipus the King and Antigone. Each play expresses human nature in a different way. Oedpius the King reflects the unavoidable death all humans go through. Antigone expresses the role of gender, the importance of family and civil disobedience.
Oedipus is a highly-influential man in the opening of Oedipus the King. He is looked up upon by others below him. One evening a drunk tells Oedipus that Polybus is not his actual father. Oedipus' parents deny this after his questioning and Oedipus goes to the Oracle of Apollo for further questioning. It is here, at the Oracle of Apollo, that Oedipus receives a fate by the gods, that he is to kill his father and bed his mother. Throughout the story of Oedipus, this fate does come to be - by the power of the gods. But there is also present a fate of humanity - Oedipus' death. Oedipus' death is reflected in such a matter that any human will die - regardless of how great he is and regardless of his background. Oedipus expresses himself as the dying man, "the man here, having met him in past times..." His death is not original, not unique, but something that many have gone through before. Oedipus the King reflects the unavoidable death humans go through.
Antigone expresses numerous human nature functions. Antigone, herself, expresses the role of gender. She is a woman going against all that a woman should be - submissive, quiet, etc. Ismene, her sister, in contrast is more of your 'normal' woman. Unlike Ismene, Antigone wants to bury her brother regardless of what rule says. She is rebellious not only as a human for this, but also because she is a woman and she is upsetting 'gender roles'. This action also expresses the role of family and how important it is for Antigone, as well as her belief in civil disobedience. Creon, like Antigone, shares the importance of family. Creon believes that obedience should not on

The Unicorns and the Chemist

One evening a city chemist traveled to the countryside. Upon his travels, the city chemist stumbled upon a unicorn farm during nighttime. Each unicorn's horn was formed of a mass of precious pearl. Evening after evening, the city chemist would saw off the unicorns' horns and sell them to a pawn shop. Mythical creatures, especially pearl horns from mythical creatures, express great value on the streets of the city. The city chemist began to ponder as to how the unicorn existed, how the pearl developed and how he could make more profit off his discoveries. The city chemist stayed up all day developing a genius plan of exposé of the unicorns and their horns. The next night, the city chemist traveled to the countryside. He began running through the field of the unicorn farm anxiously for his future fortune. The city chemist tripped over a rock and fell face-first into the valuable pearl horn of one of the remaining unicorns and was shot through the heart by the owner of the farm.
Using others substances for your benefit results in complete tragedy.

Paper Clips Reflection Paper
By Megan Small

The Paper Clips Project began as a basic middle school project to explain tolerance and prejudice on a mass level through the horrors of the Holocaust. The staff chose to study the Holocaust in Whitwell, Tennessee because the students there were sheltered and unaware of people unlike them (in Whitwell, majority is white and of a likewise religion). Together the staff and students of Whitwell Middle School spanned awareness of the Holocaust all over the world!
It is important for all to know of the Holocaust. It is essential to know of the horrors to understand how manipulated the masses can be, how easily certain characteristics of humans can be judged upon and how we can help spread tolerance through our modern world!
It is astonishing how the Paper Clips Project got worldwide attention despite being independently run through a rural town in Tennessee. I think the project is most definitely not warranted due to the amateur running of everything - from the memorial to the collection of paper clips. Nothing was planned or scheduled and I would be shocked to find that the project was 'warranted'. I believe the Paper Clips Project gained worldwide attention because it is a great cause with a unique and interesting central point - paper clips representing those lost in the Holocaust!
The Paper Clips Project was an excellent eye opener for those still unaware of the Holocaust. The project helped to gain everyone's tolerance who participated. Hopefully the Paper Clips Project and more like this project will help to prevent anything like the Holocaust to happen again!

I sat with a pout on my innocent face as I wearily asked my mom, "why would someone pull a cat's tail?" Or more importantly - why would someone touch my cat's tail? I sat in the midst of leftover food in my dining room as the gears of my young mind began to spin.
Approximately 13 years later and I find myself in my car rather than the dining room of my childhood. Smokey, my beautiful stormy cat, is in a Build-a-Bear-like container beside me in the backseat. His distinct meow is heard from the inside of the box. We are headed to a veterinarian, specifically for this reason. My angel's sweet song of a voice will not stop singing. My cat was handed to a veterinarian upon arrival.
Endless moments passed and the veterinarian returned to the waiting room. He brought me into his own tiny room. "It looks as though...," he went on and it was dreadful. A mental battle within myself, the walls were drawing in more than they already were, my heart was pounding, my face went cold - emotionless, blank. Complicated yet simple, my head would not work. What just happened? And then the veterinarian left.
Yes, my baby had a tumor. He was in my arms, limp and weak despite being the male of my life. You must understand, you must try and comprehend that this creature was not just an animal, a cat. a pet. He was someone that I felt with. Moments with Smokey were bliss, somehow connected regardless of the language barrier. We were connected.
The veterinarian came back into the room with a somber expression. I held him in my arms. Life was gone with the insertion of a chemical mixture of liquid into his back paw.
A chemical mixture of liquid. The death of my connective relationship with Smokey. This chemical mixture of liquid could very well be helpful, it could have saved my cat. But it did not, it killed my cat. Mixtures for different causes. Smokey would never again feel the pull of a tail or of our love.

National English Honor Society
Application Essay

I am surrounded daily by words - both written and spoken. The English Language Arts help us communicate and understand (or confuse) others. It is essential to be impeccable at the arts of English in society. To write, to read, to listen, to use all aspects of the English Language Arts is a daily demand in both the educational system and 'real world'.
I take great pride in my own use of English and in others' use of it. English Language Arts are found everywhere in my life - from the books I read, to the lyrics I sing. There are different levels of mastery of the language and I love to consume them all, amateur or profound. I enjoy reading, listening and sometimes even creating my own works of art through the English language. (i.e. very personal poems, journal keeping, etc.)
Specifically through literature, film and musical lyrics, I find my greatest interest in English Language Arts. English is the database to help identify and give genres to bands, books and cinema. I am consumed completely with the music world which also includes, the lyrical world. From the melancholy lyrics of the 80s band, The Smiths, to the joyful cheers of twee super band (29 members), I'm From Barcelona. I am utterly obsessed with the arts of language, the arts of music and most importantly, the English Language Arts. Additionally, I find great interest in theater. I enjoy classic films such as My Fair Lady and On Moonlight Bay to foreign films Amélie and Once. Furthermore, I enjoy the world of literature. I am not held back by one aspect - I enjoy most, if not all of it. From the modern fantasy world of Coraline by Neil Gaiman to the classic explicit tale of Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov.
As a high school student, I have only had my feet dipped in the wonderful world of language. As life goes on, I hope to expand my English Language Arts knowledge to the maximum degree through literature, cinema, music

and yeah, the crazy donkey gets really lame when the last dozenish shows you've been to were there. LI is such a haven of artists, whatup with this absence of a plethora of venues?
