"How can anyone possibly read a film script?A script is not writing. A script is a ghost of something not yet born. It is by nature imprecise, inchoate, and provocative rather than evocative.
Screen prose is rigorously functional. Its focus is very narrow, narrower than a haiku, and its purpose is very limited. And yet it is not functional in the simple way that the owner's manual of a motorcycle is functional. Screenwriting is hybrid prose, mutant prose, chimera prose - part matrix, part blueprint, part shadow play, part prayer.
Its proper audience is a motley assortment of actors, directors, agents, producers, financiers, studio executives, and movie production personnel, none of whom will actually be reading the script for pleasure.
The production of pleasure in the literary sense is not a goal of the screenwriter.
The inducing of the birth of a film - that is the best a screenwriter can hope for.
Screenplays are scrutinized, not read. Everything a writer writes in a screenplay will be scrutinized microscopically by someone: a word or a phrase of dialogue by an actor who has to speak it and invest it with reality; the details of a house by a locations manager who has to rent that house for the production at the lowest possible price;the specifications of a garden tool by the props person who will go to the ends of the Earth to find one which is green with chrome tipped tines because that's how you described it. You cannot be whimsical or expansive when writing a script, because whatever you write, someone, or a large group of someones, will cost analyze it, budget for it, schedule for it, build it, and otherwise try to actualize it on your film set.
'Be careful what you wish for' is a reality for screenwriters, especially when they are writing scripts for themselves to direct.
It should be clear, then, why elegance and beauty in screenwriting are qualities not responded to, not rewarded, not actually no
