Emotional Syphon Recordings sets a new paradigm for artist-run record labels. Officially launched by KoRn guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer in 2007, the label continues to thrive and evolve. After highly successful releases from Droid and Monster in the Machine, ESR announced the forthcoming debut from Fear and the Nervous System—Shaffer’s new band. In addition to overseeing ESR and touring with KoRn behind their Untitled album, Shaffer forged an all-star team of musicians to record Fear and the Nervous System’s debut, due out in September 2008. The cast of heavy music luminaries included Wes Borland of Black Light Burns on guitar, Billy Gould of Faith No More on bass, Brooks Wackerman of Bad Religion on drums and Zach Baird ..boards. Fear and the Nervous System sees Shaffer evolving to another level as a guitar player, singer and songwriter. His groundbreaking guitar style has only gotten more experimental, edgy and emotional on FATNS's upcoming debut. Not only has Shaffer personally grown as a guitarist and singer, but his label has also become one of the fastest growing independent record labels in the business. It’s all because the focus is on music first.
This label is for the artists. About the business model behind ESR, Shaffer comments, "I wanted to do something that catered to artists. I wanted to look after them. There are so many good musicians out there. With my band Korn, I was lucky to make that cut before the end of an era. What I want to do is pay it back with this label. I also want to hopefully create something that's fair between artist and label, because we need each other. For now, I'd love to get to the point where we have 10 solid acts. Not too many, because I don't want to over saturate. So when I have a weekly meeting with my staff, we can focus on these acts and talk about how we can make them more comfortable making music." Shaffer cares about each and every act that he works with. That’s evident from the vast success in 2007 that both Monster in the Machine and Droid garnered. Droid toured the U.S. with everyone from KoRn and HELLYEAH to Ill Nino and Flyleaf. Their crushing live show helped them develop a devout following, and their July debut saw critical acclaim. Plus Droid's debut featured a crushing collaboration with legendary Deftones frontman Chino Moreno, titled "Vengeance is Mine." It's just another example of how devastating Droid are.
Meanwhile, Monster in the Machine made a big impact as well. Their debut Butterfly Pinned led to a tour opening up for Team Sleep and huge critical success. About the label’s thriving acts, Shaffer continues, "Both of those bands have been through it for ten years. I've seen them pay their dues, and now it's their chance. A hit single would be a little icing on the top, but that's not what I'm looking for. We're making records here. That's what we're doing." In fact, both Droid’s self-titled debut and Monster in the Machine's Butterfly Pinned are important records that won’t soon be forgotten.
ESR will only continue to grow stronger, because of the emphasis on music first. Shaffer shows, “I want to find a couple more artists for the next year. So I can add artists slowly and not dilute. This way I can give everything the attention that's needed while building the infrastructure of the label. DVDs, movies and animation can come later. I'm going to try and see how far I can get. I just want to be humble about it, and be a good businessman. If you feel good about the art, then let the rest of the world see it, and if you want my opinion, be ready for the truth.” It’s a truth worth listening to. – Rick Florino
Words from Munky
Thank you for your patience....I want this company to grow and mature into a long term of great art, music, and film....so setting ESR up has taken more time than expected.(as I only employ myself at this time)...and I do not want to release anything the artists or myself were'nt proud of.
I also know that Korn Fans would be able to see right thought some b.s.
