Emergency workers are family 5/27/08
As I ponder the last seven days and the death of my son, I wonder how many people understand what emergency medical services really stands for. I have had family in emergency medical services for the last 32 years; we are a family within a family. This is not about all they do, but all they don't do. They don't get to spend the majority of holidays with their families. They don't have 9-5 jobs. They never get to put off till tomorrow what has to be done today. They don't get to see a day full of hope and sunshine, for every day consists of crisis mode treatment and circumstances, carrying the burden of help and hope to others. They seldom get to enjoy the fruit of their labor, considering that most people whose lives they may have saved will never even remember their faces, not to mention their names. They seldom get to let down their guard, for they know how very fragile life is and are reminded of it daily. My son was one of these finest. He didn't complain about his work, his life and all of the things he didn't get to do or be a part of because of it. He loved his work and the people in that special family. And while I have always had mixed feelings because of having to sacrifice that time with him, this special EMS family once again sacrificed time with their own families to honor my son at his funeral. As pallbearers, they carried him to his ambulance (the very one he had saved so many lives in), taking my son, their friend, for his last ride to his final resting place. Two fire trucks and nine ambulances led his funeral procession with pride and tears in his honor. As the realization of my son's death will take some time, again I ponder on these last seven days, realizing the sacrifice as well as the love and the honor that was so freely given. Helping me to exchange some of the pain for pride and joy is knowing my son will be missed from this very special EMS family.
If I am talking, YOU should be taking notes!!
