About me:

Kirsten Dallas and Nicola Whyte will be cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise at least £2000 for BBC Children in Need. Kirsten, whose just 16 years old, attends Thetford Grammar School and has been awarded a share in the school’s Peter Large Travel Scholarship. Kirsten has decided to use the money to help cover the costs of undertaking this big adventure, therefore ensuring that all sponsorship money raised can go to BBC Children in Need. The marathon begins on 23rd July and Kirsten will be cycling with Nicola Whyte, a keen and experienced cyclist who is looking forward to this challenging journey of over 1000 miles. The Daftenders, will be supported by Kirsten’s Mum Patsy in the family’s Land Rover Defender, which will be loaded up with supplies, tents and lots of energy bars!

Kirsten and Nicola would love to raise lots of money for Children in Need so please sponsor or support them by following the below link to their sponsorship site where you can donate online, or contact them at Kirsten.lejog@hotmail.co.uk

20th July
The car is loaded and we are ready to go! It's been a busy and, at points, a stressful day but we are down to the last few jobs now. The graphics will be going on the car later this evning which will look awsome and then, most importantly, we will have a scrummy take-away curry!!
We were up early this morning to go over to Norwich to have some photos taken for the Eastern Daily Press. They will be following our progress and you can see us in print tomorrow and Monday as we set off.
Also, we have had a slight rearangment of our days as Nic has been invited to an interview at Cardiff University. We are going to cover a short distance on Sunday to get ahead and then have a rest-day on Wednesday while Nic goes over to Cardiff.
We are very proud to announce that at this time we are 85% of the way to completing our £2000 sponsorship target! Due to this early success we have decided to raise our target to £3000 so plaese keep on suporting us!!! Just because we have set off doesn't meen we are finished yet, you will be able to sponsor us even after we are back home!!
So some really great news so set off with! Now all thats left to do is cycle! Although all the organisation that has gone into this adventure from Patsy, Alex and everyone else who has helped is an achievment in itself to be honest. Once we are started we will leave a daily blog, thanks to Stuart, so you can follow our progress. Keep leaving us coments and messages, we love hearing from you!!!

Day 1 - 22nd July
We're off! We travelled down to Land's End this morning and registered the start of our trip. We also went over to the famous sign post to have our photos taken and then headed over to the start line. It was at the start line that I was expecting to feel nervous about the trip ahead but in actual fact, I felt a real buzz and was extremely excited about the adventure we were starting.
We were intending only to do a short 15 miles today, but ended up doing a full 46 miles which means we have caught up our first full intended day leaving us placed well for our necessary break on wednesday for Nic's job interview in Cardiff. There were some huge hills on our route but we got on really well especially with the support from Patsy, Alex, Pete and Stuart supplying us with regular food breaks and lots of cake!
It has been a really promising start to our trip, made all the better by the weather holding out for the whole time we were cycling. I even managed to get sun burnt, but for those that know me that will not come as much of a suprise! Nic is also thrilled with our first day because our progress has exceeded all expectations.
Check back soon to see how we are getting along,
Kirsten

Day 2 - 23rd July
We have reached the camp site at Bude covering 60 miles today. the weather slowed us down with it pouring rain all day, luckily it dryed up for us to put up the tent this evening. This morning the rest of the family left and its is now just the three of us. We are now relaxing after one of the hardest days with a long distance to cover and lots of hills to climb. All in all we are very pleased with the progress today,
Kirsten and Nicola

Day 3 - 24th July
An easy day today, no cycling at all! Patsy and myself drop nicola of at the station in Exeter earlier today to travel to her interview in Cardiff. On our way back from the station we stopped of in Bude to buy wellies and a few other needed item, I also had my first taste of a Cornish pastie. Now back at camp we are getting everything organised ready for setting of on Thursday.
After a night on our own we get Nic back tomorow evening so no cycling tomorow either but a big Thursdsay.Best of luck to Nic at the interview!
Kirsten

Day 4 - 25th July
Just me at camp tonight. Patsy is picking up Nic from the station after her interview. I here the interview went very well and she has been offered and accepted the job!
So for me and Patsy today was another day in Bude, did some shopping then went to the beach and watched some surfing. Also we drove some of the steepest and scariest roads we have every seen, 30% at some points! Was so fun.
So im now just back at camp getting oranisted for tomorrows cycling. The next day off we have will probalby be in Scottland!
Kirsten

Day 5 - 26th July
Bude to Withypool-66 miles
Woke up in the most miserable weather and with so much rain parts of our route were flowing like rivers. All the rain meant we were soaked to the skin by lunch time, but dispite the weather the cycling was great. We were going down hills of 25% then having to cycle into slopes 20%, chanllenging but really fun. Thankfully in the afternoon the sun came out allowing us to dry of and see the views around us. We then came down over Exmore and reach speeds of 41 mph.We were Heading to a camp site that was so exposed that peoples tent were on there sides in the hedge. However Patsy came to the rescue and booked us into the Royal Oak Inn, which was stunning. So after a huge meal, a warm bath, a very comfy bed and an exallent day under our belts, we are well up for tomorrow.
Kirsten and Nicola

Day 6 - 27th July
Withypool to Chedder-66 miles
A hole day with no rain! Unfortunatly we took a bit of a wrong turn early on which meant we had a slight detour, but it was a lovly route with few extra miles, it also made us feel slightly better when we found out Patsy had also gone wrong and gone on an even bigger detour. After stopping for lunch with Patsy, we went over the Quantock hills which meant a very long up hill but allowed us to free wheel almost all the way to Bridgewater. We then entered the Summerset levels which felt a bit like home in Norfolk. It was a refreshing change to be on the flat. Now at a new camp site Patsy has cooked up dinner and set up camp ready for us to crash out and prepare for tomorrow.
We're both feeling good with no major ackes or pains after finishing the hardest quarter!
Kirsten and Nicola

Day 7 - 28th July
Left the campsite in good time this morning and once again went straight into a huge hill. Certainly got the muscles going and provided some stunning views from the top. Stopped for some lunch with Patsy then once passed Bristol we were in Wales for a short time then returned to England. When crossing the River Wye we could see how high the water had been previously during the flooding and the high water levels were also obvious from the other rivers we saw, which all looked quite menacing. Threats of rain to come onto the already saturated ground, we decided not to camp tonight, but to phone around some B and B's. The B and B we found is called Cwn Craig Farm which is a gorgeous Georgian farm house with loads of space and a good local! Hopefully with the comfy beds tonight we will get a good nights sleep ready for a long day tomorrow.
Thanks alot to everyone who has sent texts and messages, we really appreciate the support so keep them coming!
Kirsten and Nicola

Day 8 - 29th July
68 miles
Perfect weather today. We made our way around Hereford where the recent flooding were obvious in places with some bidges being repaired and closed still roads. We were cycling along at quite a pace and after lunch we were soon at our final destination, the Four Alls Inn, just outside Market Drayton. We are now very excited because we are now further north than everybody back home in Norfolk!!! We are staying in a lovely B and B with really freindly owners where we can refresh after our long day. Another really good day covering a very good distance and we are both still really enjoying it.
Kirsten and Nicola

Day 9 - 30th July
67 miles
Really pleasing day today. We have managed to catch up to our original time schedule even with the break for Nic's job interview. This makes the long mileages really worthwhile especially now we are north of Manchester. The weather has stayed good and the reasonably flat terrain allowed us to really speed along. We had to make it through some very busy towns which wasn't as enjoyable as the nice countryside we have been in but we managed well. Today was our first puncture! Kirsten got a thorn but it was all quite a good giggle because we got to show off our repair skills.
Kirsten and Nicola

Day 10 - 31th July
61 miles Corlly-Perksylonsdale
Another very successful day really pleased to have another big milage done especially as today provided some of the best scenery yet. Are route took us across the Yorkshire Dales which were stunning. some very long and steap up hills to the top but we could free wheel almost all the way back to camp. We are back in our tent tonight which we have attually been looking forward to, its been great sitting out in the Sun with Patsy's amazing cooking and a glass of wine!
We are taking a short day tomorrow as we have made such good progress and its about time we gave our legs a bit of a rest.
Kirsten and Nicola

Day 11 - 1st August
Rest Day
To day we have decided to take a rest day after progressing so well, important for the leg muscles! We took a walk into the town centre of Kirksbylongsdale by a cafe for cake and scone. Then in the afternoon we took a drive into the Lake District to the area Kirsten stayed in on D of E. We drove Lake Windomere and drove over towards Eskdale. Such a stunning part of the country.
We had a great day exploring and relaxing and are looking for to the next stage of are journy.
Kirsten and Nicola

< Day 12 - 2nd August
60 miles Kirksbylongdale-Brampton
A very successful day today! We left in good time and cycled at quite a pace meaning we arrived in Brampton at 4.30. The route lovly and cycling terrain so we really enjoyed the day. A highlight of the day was seeing 500 miles on the cycle computer. Getting in early allowed us to take a walk in the evening after our dilicous food from Patsy and a visit from a very friendly and cute cat.
We are both still loving trip and are very excited about crossing the scottish border tomorrow as well as the finish line at John o'Groats in a weeks time.

< Day 13 - 3rd August
51 miles Brampton - Ettrick
We are in Scotland! We left really early as Patsy and Nic got very little sleep due to a noisy campsite, though Kirsten slept through all of it. After a lunch stop for yet more cake we arrived early into camp. The boarder provided long shallow hills that we could speed down. The roads were extremely quiet which allowed us to enjoy the scenery. We set up camp and had a scrummy barbeque. Getting very excited about the finish but still loving every minute of the trip. Even after all her fuss, Patsy is loving the camping so much that she has been planning all sorts of camping holidays.
Kirsten and Nicola

< Day 14 - 4th August
Ettrick-Kinross
Today was probably the hottest day yet! This morning cycle was on very quiet B-roads through river valleys that were really gorgeous with the sun on them. We even got a road all to our selfs as it was closed to cars to repair a bridge. It was great fun as it allowed us to cruise down several miles of downhill at 30 mph.
Unfortunately, this afternoon was slightly frustating as we were trying to follow the cycle route though Dunfermline that was very badly way marked. It seemed to take ages to get out and over to our B&B but we made it fine. The B&B is lovly, it's in a small village outside Kinross called Yetts O'Muckhart. We are looking forward to a comfy nights sleep!
Kirsten and Nicola

< Day 15 - 5th August
55 miles Kinross - Blair Atholl
Yesterday was hot and Sunny, today we got rained on all day! Luckily the rain isn't really a problem so we got on fine left our B&B and cycled 30 miles to a tea shop in Bankfoot. We both had very taste paninis and then got back on the road. We soon met the A9 cycle route which has been excellent. It is very well sign posted and has great paths though fields, woods, towns and beside the roads which povides varied and spectacular scenery in places. Another soggy campsite then we will continue up the A9 tomorrow. Doesn't seem far now!
Kirsten and Nicola

< Day 16 - 6th August
50 miles Blair Atholl-Aviemore
We continued along the A9 cycle route today. It's very beautiful to cycle but some of the surfices are really bad. this meant with in the space of about 1 hour Nick had 2 back tyre punctures! We got covered in black oil but fixed the punctures no problem and were quiet pround of our mechanical skills!
A highlight of the day was reaching Drumochter summit and 463 meters and then cruising down to Kingussie. We stopped for some lunch and shared a table with a couple from Holland. They explained to us that they were in the area orientiring with 4,000 others. This meant finding acomidaition anywhere near was imposible.
We are back in our tent tonight but it is a quiet campsite so we will get a good night ready for tomorrow.
Kirsten and Nicola

< Day 17 - 7th August
59 miles Aviemore-Dingwall
We finished our stretch on the A9 today. We had quiet a strong head-wind and some rain. We stopped for lunch at the Culloden Battlefield. We cycled down to Inverness and it was so windy on the bridge we had to walk but it's great being past Inverness as it really isn't far now. We came into Dingwall and found a campsite that said it was full but let us .. a chat with Nic. It so windy here we nearly lost the tent!
Very excited about the finish!!
Kirsten and Nicola

< Day 18 - 8th August
52 miles Dingwall-Crask
Today has been our best day yet! It has been hot and sunny all day which has made look everything beautiful. We cycled for miles in the middle of nowhere then around one corner was The Crask Inn, which was our destination for the night. It's a great place full of fascinating people on other adventures. We had exelant food whist doing lots of chatting.
The blog may take a few days to be up dated as all avalable blogger are leaving to meet us at Joan O' Groat. Everyone is very excited.
