"Heavier than a bulldozer . . . one of the heaviest bands I've heard all year" Metal Forces
"These guys have their own powerful sound, a sound that could very possibly be enough to disintegrate your ears and/or speakers." Rock Hard
"Very good US metal band coming from Chicago that never released an album, and it's a pity! . . . a group which would have deserved much, much more than anonymity." occitan-oldschoolmetalhead.blogspot.com
"Great US Power from true Defenders of Metal!!! The sound on this tape is good, the songwriting is unbelievable! One of the stongest demos I ever heard!! After receiving this demo from a friend outta belgium (Hail Benoit!) I could find out that ENFORCER got together in 1982, after some members played in coverbands before. The Demo is from 1984, but sounds like 86! They were hailing from Illinois and had one track ("High Treason") on the "Iron Tyrants Vol. 1" compilation which was released by World Metal Records (Iron Works sublabel) in 1984.
It's curious, but the opener of the demo and sampler-track "High Treason" is the weakest song on the tape! It's typical US Metal with nice guitars and powerful high vocals, good but not really outstanding.
The second track on the tape is faster, US Power Metal in perfection! It has the title "Born to avenge" and is not mentioned on the cover (at least on my copy). Like "Bury the Knife" it has been written later and shows the bands new direction to an even more powerful style, comparable to LEATHER NUNN or early SAVATAGE and reaching the same class!! The following "Salem's Curse" begins with touching accoustic guitars, before it changes to a US Power Metal smasher par excellance! The vocals on this tape remind me on Harry "The Tyrant" of JAG PANZER! Concluding "Final Conflict" is a slower track, making clear the whole width of the tragedy: ENFORCER would have been good for the hell of a real CLASSIC if given the chance of releasing a full album... I shed a tear and close this chapter." forgottensteel

Enforcer - Classic Chicago Metal (Stormspell)
By Mike Ballue
July 26, 2009
Classic Chicago Metal indeed, Enforcer along with early Trouble, War Cry and Witchslayer gave Chicago a reputation for birthing some seriously heavy and thick metal during the glory days of the 80’s. Initially a three track demo saw light, followed quickly by an extended five song version in 1984. Until now, that was all that was available to the metal hordes. And as awesome as that demo was, old, rickety cassettes and multi generational burns were but a teaser of what could be, and courtesy of Stormspell now is.
First track “High Treason” positively thunders along with a thickness and heaviness more than a bit reminiscent of Sabbath or Trouble. I wouldn’t label this out and out doom, but it certainly has an element of that in it. The guitar, bass and drums hammer and pummel you like a crashing wave of molten iron. The vocals are killer 80’s metal classic in style and the song is well written and executed. “Salem’s Curse” outright slays with a semi-galloping main riff giving way alternately to a slower pounding chorus and epic soaring bridges…dark, heavy and through and through metal, excellent song structure, excellent vocals and inventive spot on and searing soloing…if you don’t love this one…you’re probably not metal…at all…this is eight minutes of pure metal bliss. “Final Conflict” continues the assault from the demo. This is a light and shade epic alternately enthralling and bruising and like its predecessor, shows well Enforcer’s ability to provide quality and maintain interest over long song lengths.
“Born to Avenge” steps on the gas, demonstrating that Enforcer could effectively maintain their heaviness at faster tempos also…this one sounds like it would have been a neck snapping frenzy live. “Bury The Knife” rounds out the 84’ demo material in fine metal style, featuring some rousing riffing and soloing courtesy of Brian Lee and a stellar vocal performance from Doug Trevisan. As would be hoped for with a reisuuse of a demo, there are a lot of extras included also. Next up are instrumental tracks “Fate Worse Than Death” and “Enforcer” from a 1985 rehearsal. The sound quality definitely takes a dip at this point and, while the lack of vocals takes a certain something away, the music itself shows it was a shame that the band left off soon after this. The songs fall into the same general area style wise as the demo tunes, with just a pinch more of a progressive element. The last four tracks on the CD are from a pre-demo rehearsal in 1984. Of these “Winter” and “Syndrome” standout as every bit the equal of their demo brethren.
As if the bonus rehearsal tracks were not enough, this one comes with a bonus DVD of Enforcer running through all the tracks from the demo and a few others…in 2008! While it does have to be said that the energy level from the crowd is disappointing, it is quite worthwhile to see the lads run through their stuff live. Here’s hoping this will be a productive reunion and that Chicago will wake up and support the metal jewel they’ve so recently reacquired. Enforcer having been one of the cream of the demo only crop, and now having about the best imaginable re-package (well except for vinyl junkies, who are probably slavering for a double LP) readily available, there is really no excuse for the true metal head to pass this up. Cover art, liner notes, pictures, lyrics…all the packaging support is here for the killer music within.

The only thing disappointing about the concert on the 18th was that there weren't more people there to enjoy it! I have to say I was particularly fond of Faces Of Death getting thrown in the setlist... any chance of more Fatal Violence tracks working their way in for future shows?
