Engine Room Collective Concerts
Monday the 7th May 2007, the UK’s May Bank Holiday, saw the Engine Room Collective continue to host their monthly music concerts featuring some of the UK’s young, gifted and aspiring pan musicians. The Inn on the Green, 3-5 Thorpe Close, Portobello Green, Notting Hill, London W10 5XL is the venue to be every first Monday in the month.
The Engine Room Collective on the night comprised of Michael Bailey and Kwadjo Amponsem on bass guitar, Ugo Del Mirani on keyboards, Ray Carless on Sax, Bobby Stignac on percussion and Matthew Phillip on drums who was celebrating his birthday. They accompanied Brent Holder, former World Steelband Champion soloist, founder member of the Caribbean Steel International band and musical arranger for the Stardust Steel Orchestra. Brent gave an awesome, energetic and inspiring display of his musicianship on the tenor pan. Michael ‘Bubbles’ Oliviere, well known pan tuner, calypsoian, musical arranger cum singer treated the audience to a preview of his new CD by singing a couple of its tracks. Yasmin James also sang one track on the night but the high point of the evening was when The Engine Room Collective, Brent and Yasmin accompanied ‘Bubbles’ in his rendition of Bob Marley’s, No Woman No Cry.
Already there is talk amongst the steel pan community that ‘the Abbey’ has been revived and pan lovers can enjoy a wealth of steel pan music on a regular basis rather than seasonal concerts.
Pannists who have appeared at these concerts include Justin Russell, Carlene Etienne, Gary Moustache, Robert Clarke, Delphina ‘Panness’ James, Samuel Du Bois, Kyron Akal, Daniel Louis and Brent Holder

The sound of the steel band is very new - it has been developed on the island of Trinidad in the years since the Second World War. But its origins are much older - they date back to the days when slaves were brought to the Caribbean from Africa. As they were not allowed to play their traditional drums, at times of celebration percussion instruments were improvised from whatever was at hand - bamboo canes, gourds, bottles and metal cooking pots and kettles.
When slavery was abolished in the mid-19th century the newly emancipated slaves were allowed to join the island's most popular festival - Carnival - introduced many years earlier by the island's Spanish rulers. The lively rhythms of their improvised percussion bands provided accompaniment to vocal music for many years, but it could not yet provide the melody.
Winston 'Spree' Simon is credited with being the first person to produce several different notes from one 'Kettle' drum by deliberately hammering dents into its surface, in 1939. Although Carnival was cancelled during the war. Experiments with the new instruments continued, using the 44 gallon oil drums acquired from the U.S armed forces stationed in Trinidad.
By 1946 Simon had produced a 'pan' with 14 notes. Soon afterwards Ellie Mannette devised the method of 'sinking' the surface of the pan and tempering it, first by heating and then throwing oil on to the hot metal. Oil drums were cut to different lengths to produce different tonal ranges, and the steel band was born.
The first steel band competition was held in Trinidad in 1950, and in 1955 the Trinidad All-Steel Percussion Orchestra (TASPO) performed at the Festival of Britain - the first time the sound of steel had been heard in this country.
