England Football Songs.....2006........I have always been about five years behind everybody else when it comes to doing things, so it was no surprise that I decided to write a World Cup song for Germany 2006 at the eleventh hour. Merging two song ideas a la 'A day in the life', it wasn't until March 2006 before we actually entered Maboo studio in Southport to begin the venture. Automatically, there was an enemy in our midst. Something that wasn't going to help in our cause....and that was lack of time. As it had been forty years since England had lifted the World Cup, I christened the project Assignment4zer0. Expectations of England were high at the time and many thought they had the best team in years and could possibly achieve their golden aim. My aim however seemed extremely unachievable as time marched on. With the track nearing completion, we required a band to front the project. I wanted the image to be laddish, down the pub with the mates to watch the match etc etc. Enter STROBE. They had the look, they had the sound and they had the attitude. An added bonus was that they were passionate about football - albeit their team choice could be better ! Strobe are an accomplished band and deserve success within the industry. Needless to say that time did beat us on this one, but the legacy remains here in its full glory. Whilst we suffered Stan Boardman, Embrace and Tony Christie at the time, many of the better unsigned World Cup songs didn't stand a chance. Victims of the 'it's who you know culture'. Deserved of a mention at this point are Absolute Distribution who pick up my 'Knobheads of the Project Award'. Thanks to Steve Boyce Buckley for working wonders on the idea and achieving a song that I feel is comfortably in the same league as the 'Self Preservation Society' from the Italian Job. ah its been great... sunny with a warm breeze.... my boy scored 5 goals today... they both dominate the soccer fields here..... everyone always asks why they are so good. and if they got specail training... i reply... no they are just british.....!! have a good weekend lads.....
