About me: England's Glory Ladies Morris are one of the oldest ladies morris dance sides in the WORLD - this year celebrating our Jade (Coral) anniversary - 35 continuous years of success, being formed in 1973.
The side were named after the famous brand of matches that had been manufactured in Gloucester for about 100 years, by the Moreland family. Sadly, production of matches in Gloucester came to an end in 1975, and although the England's Glory brand-name still survives, no matches at all are made in the UK today.
Originally the ladies wore grey outfits, but soon changed to the Edwardian sailor suits in blue, white, and red, with straw boaters, worn today. These are the French national colours, and depict the connection with 'La Gloire' (The Glory), a French warship of very advanced design of the 1860's, which gave rise to the original matchbox name. The British answer to La Gloire was HMS Warrior, now preserved and on show at Portsmouth Royal Dockyard.
We mainly perform Cotswold morris dances from the village of Ilmington near Stratford on Avon, which had a long history of girls and ladies dancing the morris.
The side today numbers around 25 dancers (all female) and a large (sometimes!) band of musicians.(male and female) Occupations include teachers, social workers, librarians, computer programmers, farmers, nurses, and housewives.(plus a few officially retired people!)
Highlights of the sides history have included being the first ever ladies morris side to appear on television (Pebble Mill at One), the first ladies side to be officially invited to Sidmouth Festival, and overseas tours to Sweden, Finland, and Guernsey.
During the winter months the side practises on Monday evenings in Cheltenham, and in the summer we dance out at pubs in Gloucestershire, and pass round a collecting tin for a deserving charity. In 2007 we collected £200 for the 'Crossroads’ charity which provides respite care for carers. This year our Charity is 'Dogs for the Disabled'. More details can be found on our web site:
http://www.englandsglory.org.uk which also has up to date news of our current programme of engagements.
