About me: We are a grass-roots organization, started in late 2007, in the Piedmont-Triad area. It is our belief that we, as citizens, must take on the task of fighting discrimination in all of its forms. We plan to do this through education, speaking to groups, handing out flyers, holding meetings and hosting events. We will also demonstrate against hate groups that make public appearances.
It is time for change- people need to be educated on matters of discrimination. The Civil Rights Movement took us a long way, but the job isn't finished yet. We need to work together for change in our own communities and daily lives.
If you live in the Piedmont-Triad area and are interested, don't just view our site, please contact us!
Who I'd like to meet: EQUALITY COALITION OF NORTH CAROLINA MISSION STATEMENT
We hear the Civil Rights Movement consistently spoken about and referred to in the past tense, as though the struggle is over. The general misconception is that discrimination, in all of its forms, is a thing of the past. This is not true. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, in 2006 there were 33 different hate oriented groups in North Carolina alone, and a few more that haven't been listed yet.
Many of us experience or witness racism and/or discrimination in our everyday lives. Sometimes, because of the subtle way it is presented, it goes unnoticed. Whether overt or disguised, racism and discrimination are always insidious, damaging, and intolerable. The KKK and National Socialist Movement (the American Nazi Party) ARE HERE IN OUR STATE, ACTIVE IN OUR COMMUNITIES! This is why the Equality Coalition of North Carolina was created. We stand by 6 main points:
1. We must take action against Racism, Religious Discrimination, Sexism, Homophobia, and all other forms of Discrimination.
2. We must stand up and fight all hate groups, and not allow them to strengthen and gain more ground in our state.
3. We must confront and combat the more subtle discrimination we find in our daily lives.
4. We must teach tolerance and promote acceptance in our state.
5. We must promote and practice non-violence when confronting and fighting hate, except in situations of self defense.
6. We must promote an equal quality of life for all people through humanitarian efforts.
All of us must play a part, to take action, and it is up to everyone to make this world a better place. For more information, or if you would like to get involved, please contact us.
