Dee Taylor and Joe Natoli started this band in 1989, under the name Dog Eat Dog. They performed in local clubs in Akron and Kent. In 1991 they opened for the Goo Goo Dolls in Cleveland. After disbanding in 1996, Dee went on to play in numerous bands: Cherry Bomb (the secret weapon that was always kept a secret), The Mess and Carter Street, one of which played in Arizona, Atlanta, New York and the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame! After a stint in New York and LA, she moved back to Akron in 2001.Equals Four has evolved from years of friendship and an overwhelming love of music. Over fifteen years ago Dee and Rob met at the Quonset Hut, a local independent music store in Akron Ohio, and instantly formed a very close friendship. In less than a year, Rob joined Denise's band Dog Eat Dog. Within a year, Lynn joined the band, which lasted another five years. Andy, also a part of the Quonset Hut family, was Dog Eat Dogs gun for hire when the band was without a drummer. 1996 witnessed the end of the music of Dog Eat Dog. Months and years went by with little communication between band mates and friends. Then in 2004 the same place that brought them together 14 years earlier was instrumental in the birth of Equals Four. A Quonset Hut reunion was being planned and Andy suggested that the band get together to play one show, everyone agreed. The Quonset Hut reunion never happened; however, something magical did.The band agreed to play one show at a small local bar with few expectations. The show went so well that they agreed to play a few more. Close to nine years after their break-up the band and the friendships were stronger than ever. Suddenly the band began creating new songs. Topics such as: life, love, change, social issues, and humor provide the inspiration to the music of Equals Four.Equals Four has received accolades from local music critics, radio personalities, and concert promoters alike. The band is continuing to create high energy, melodic, and above all honest music. Rubber City Clothing
Isn’t it funny how sometimes a routine activity can turn into something
potentially big and definitely cool? This past weekend as I did my
usual rocking of t-shirt sales, I was asked about music in the store by
one of the customers. She asked me if we ever sell stuff by local bands
in the store. Without a thought, I said “well, not really, but we can now.” Turns out the customer was Dee Taylor, lead singer and guitarist for the band Equals Four, which just came out with a new album, Believe. And
with that, she handed me a stack of their new album and a promotional poster (which is now prominently displayed behind the counter). Believe
is on rotation in the RCC playlist, and is really good. The songs are fun & rockin’, and it’s the kind of music you know would be great to see live.
So it was definitely cool to meet Dee and find out about Equals Four, but
then it got me thinking…. We’re an Akron store, with Akron Pride (on t-shirts), we blog about Akron, Akron, Akron, Akron. Why not Akron music
too? So much of what we’ve done lately has been related to music, thanks
to Chrissie Hynde, The Black Keys, and Devo. Why not promote Akron
music in the store? We’re already working with places like Frank’s Place,
The Barley House, 91.3 The Summit, and The Toy Marble Museum selling
their swag.
So let it be known throughout Akron, Summit County, and lands beyond……while Rubber City Clothing is in fact a clothing store, we are also SOOOOOOOOO much more. We are Akron. We are the Rubber City.
If you have a band, a bar, a restaurant, something that IS Akron, we
want to be a part of it. We would love to have your CDs, t-shirts, etc.
in the store. Sadly, I don’t think I’ll be able to realize my dream of hawking
Swenson’s hamburgers out of here (let’s be honest…I’d eat them all).
