Eric Angus Whyte arrived on the east coast scene in 2004 with the release of his critically acclaimed debut album Always Home. The disc was nominated for the 2005 ECMA Folk Album of the Year. EAW performed at the Stan Roger's Folk Festival in 2005 and 2006 and also at Toronto's North By Northeast Festival.
In 2007, he was nominated for the ECMA Roots/Traditional Album of the Year as part the cast of Cape Breton Lyrics & Laughter.
On May 23rd of this year, EAW released his follow-up disc called "A Little Rough Around The Edges". The album, which features Gordie Sampson, JP Cormier and Blue Rodeo's Greg Keelor, was recorded live in the studio and has a wonderful organic vibe about it. The new CD has been heralded by one reviewer as "..the most refreshing and innovative album I've heard in a long time."
As of late EAW has been performing in a number of prisons, churches and the odd pub throughout the Maritime provinces. Commenting on his choice of venues he says, "I enjoying playing for audiences that you can let your guard down around and speak openly about life and convictions and Jesus. I find you get that dynamic frequently in prisons, often in churches and occasionly in pubs." His live performances include many stories as well as the use of the hammered dulcimer, bouzouki and piano.
Recently, Edinburgh's GiveWay recorded EAW's 'Lost In This Song' as the title track of their new album, produced by Phil Cunningham. You can listen and purchase their version at www.scotloads.co.uk/album.php/1528
Hi Eric - Just wanted to let you know that "Always Home" kicks off my list of the Top 11 Cape Breton Songs of the Past Decade! It's on my MySpace blog (in addition to being published in today's edition of The Strait Area Reporter) - check it out! Hope you're having a great summer - congrats on making the Alive On The Island line-up! Hope we'll see you there or any of your other shows! God bless you, my friend!
Hey beh, HOw's the cross Canada tour going? Enjoying the train? Looks like we're going to be able to do a few camp days for the first of the week before we head to NFLD. Catch ya soon, looking forward to hearing some stories.
Hey Eric, hows it going? Not long till we're all of to the US...where about you playing? Our album's getting pressed at the minute so we'll get one out to you ASAP...maybe in the US. Hope you're well and the music's still flowing. GW xxxx
Eric. It was great to have you here for a few days. It seems to fly by. But you rocked Bubba's, and gave all your cloths to the homeless, even your shoes! what more can I say. I love you Man!
I'm glad to see you here. Makes it easier to keep in touch. The trip to Cape Breton still dominates all our conversations. It was the highlight of this tour. Love the CD! Come visit when you can.
Yes, I'm familiar with Rich Mullins. He was a fine musician and a tremendous example. I play a 4 octave instrument made by Rick Fogel (http://www. geocities. com/whamdiddle/). I've been playing for a little more than 12 years. A high point was traveling to Cape Breton with my dulcimer. Played at Margaree Valley Baptist Church and at the Normaway Inn! I look forward to the next time ...
Greetings from western Oregon. Thanks for the add! I've enjoyed "Always Home" and look forward to listening to your new CD. Saw a picture of you playing hammered dulcimer! A Cape Bretoner playin' HD!!! How long have you played?
eric, you're my favorite boy cousin over 20. I'm sad you got rid of your facebook... theres now a fb group about you!! and I love you, and can't wait to hear this new CD!!! (these are my thoughts of the day)
So here I am surfing the interweb and what do I find? this amazing music!! I can't even describe it! It’s like the music of Anne Murray mixed with the voice of Celine Dion. or maybe its the hair of Celine Dion mixed with the face of Anne Murray.. I'm not quite sure what attracts me to the sound… But man is it good! If I knew who this guy was... and I don't… I would buy his music and four or five copies for my friends
Nice tunes beh, and nice piano, hope you were honest and put it to good use, you know there are a lot of starving children out there who would love to have a piano like that, hehe, much love brother, see you soon Rob.
