Eric Sartin Biography
Millions of people dream of becoming a pop star. Perhaps, hundreds of these hopefuls arrive in Austin each year, looking to wrap their hands around the promise of a recording contract or publishing deal. The same is true for Eric Sartin, who relocated to Austin to continue studying psychology, and to try his hand at music. It is in Austin, that the singer-songwriter, made his musical connection with Jim Erickson, former Motown Producer, and Gerardo Larios, an Audio Engineer. Both of them helped Eric find his musical voice and channel his artistry.
"What I consider to be the beginning of my career, is when I started working with Jim Erickson and Gerardo Larios. Their professionalism in recording my artworks, really allowed me to find my sound and transition from novice to a pretty seasoned artist."
While he has settled on his musical path, there has been a long journey to get to where he is now. Born in the small town of Bridge City, in Southeast Texas, Eric was exposed to music from day one, and was named after blues musician, Eric Clapton. Even in his earlier years, Eric was busy honing his craft and trying to perfect it. While in high school, Eric began focusing on English Language Arts, which helped him develop his writing skills. From there, he was encouraged to enter journalism competitions by his teachers, and as a result he began to blossom as a song-writer. During his late high school years, he studied psychology, which helped mold his songwriting. From the onset, Eric has always been determined to showcase his performance skills, and satisfy his thirst for creative expression. He then decided to channel his creativity by getting involved in theatre arts.
After high school, Eric decided that it was time for a transition, which subsequently led him to Austin. One thing's for sure, Eric is a man that is aware of his musical identity, so it might come as a surprise, that it took him some time to discover it. “When I was 14 I started playing guitar, but I always knew that classic rock wasn’t where my interest was. While I started writing lyrics around that time, I listened to all sorts of music to find the best parts of each one and to try to determine what it was that grabbed me about each song. I would listen to such diverse artists as Stain’d, Madonna, Train, The Click Five, Saliva, Britney Spears, Matchbox 20, Michael Jackson, Fefe Dobson, ATC, etc. I finally settled on pop music as the sound that inspired me.”
With just one listen to Eric's music, there’s a distinct familiarity to it, that‘s uncompromising. His music is a unique blend of punk, disco, house, and smooth pop, and like a true artist, he pulls from his own experiences to mold his lyrical subject matter. His songs reflect on universal themes like: relationships, finding yourself, and feeling torn.
As an artist, it's undeniable that he has a flair for bringing the listener into his dreamy, synth-pop, musical world, in an almost trance like way. So it's not surprising that his musical style is as diverse as his influences, which range from acts like: Michael Jackson and Madonna, to The Killers, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Rihanna. His music is certainly a recipe for success, and delivers universal appeal that anyone can appreciate without being too far fetched. “I try to be unique, but I don’t feel that it’s so important to do something strange that nobody has ever done before. There is something comforting about familiarity, and I think pop begets pop. I want to express myself in a way that is totally Eric, but I also want to keep the parts of pop music that worked for artists before me.”
His enthusiasm for pop music is apparent, “Many people think pop music is cheesy, but I think it’s that fast pace and mindless dance craze that make you feel alive.” Take for instance, his song “ Curious,” which talks about having a fixation on someone and the feeling you get when you wonder what it would be like to be with that person. The song features a fresh, captivating, and addictive pop melody that will have you coming back for more, as he sings, “There are no secrets baby, so let the games begin…” “Driven like I’m furious, got me like so curious.” In the song, Eric captures all the elements that make up pop music: catchy beats, memorable lyrics, and a great hook.
When asked what he wants people to take away from his music, he says, “I want people to have something to jam out to in their cars and not have to think too much about.”
An artist becoming a house hold name, is no doubt a long hard road, but no one is better prepared to travel it than he is. "I always look back with a warm feeling on the complete transformation I’ve undergone even this far, and I’m still continuing to evolve. When I started out I was a naïve kid with a squeaky voice who didn’t know the first thing about a copyright. Now, my voice has changed so much that I feel like I’m a formidable player in the biz, and I’ve gained a lot of experience and knowledge about the industry, myself, and the whole process of creating music. I’ve been very blessed and there’s no doubt in my mind that someone like me could not have come this far without an ethereal purpose for my life."
He’s a breath of fresh air, in an age when pop music is categorized by highly packaged, overly sexualized, teen queens. Eric Sartin is destined to stand out, in an industry that has become accustomed to formulaic music.
He is an artist on the brink of a burgeoning pop career, and is a man that’s prepared to get his taste of fame, relish in the spotlight, and propel his career to new heights. The old cliché anything worth having is a lot of work, has never been truer in his case, but he has been working hard towards his dream for a long time coming. And, one thing’s for sure, he’s sure to reap the benefits of hard work.
