   About Eric's Trip
Eric's Trip were a band that began in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, in 1990. The band writes: "We started in June 1990 when Rick, Julie, Chris and Mr. Ed Vaughan began deafening ourselves in the basement. We moved our bodies enough to play some shows. We lost Ed in November '91 and borrowed Mark from Purple Knight to fill in. We were invited to play Halifax a few times and were surprisingly spotted by a stray Sub Pop lady. We kept playing and recording and are still doing the same today. Mark is still with us and is working out fine." Though this quote is a little outdated, it's true that Mark stayed with the band until the end and remained a part even as they transformed into the renamed group, Elevator To Hell, when Julie left to write her own music. Eric's Trip took their name from a Sonic Youth song of the same title, which was off of the their album "Daydream Nation."

Rick described the band as "sappy melodic pop music on top of thick distortion" which is pretty accurate. They are champions of what is generally called the 'lo-fi' sound, since they use a lot of lo-fi recording methods and production values. A typical ET song will hold bits of other songs, background talking, tape hiss, found sounds, and random noise. The members of Eric's Trip began in a number of other groups before joining together. Rick and Chris were both involved in the Moncton groups Bloodstain, Dang, and The Forest, while Mark came fromThe Whoremans, No Explanation, and the aforementioned Purple Knight.

Eric's Trip released a number of cassettes and singles before signing with Sub Pop records to release three albums and a few EP's, aswell as several EP releases with other labels. In 1996 the band broke up and Rick continued with Mark as Elevator To Hell while Julie began a 'solo' career under the name Broken Girl. Both stayed with Sub Pop for a few years, and Elevator released a number of albums under various names like Elevator To Hell, Elevator Through, before just settling on plain "Elevator" as they were off Sub Pop and began releasing music on various labels and eventually putting out mostly self-released CD-Rs made by Rick himself on his label Great Beyond Recordings.

Julie eventually jumped from Sub Pop to other labels as well, releasing material on Tree Records and Jagjaguwar. Both Elevator and Julie are still making music. Rick is still doing Elevator with Mark, but also has a new band named The Unintended, while Julie records under her own name releasing albums for Endearing Records. In 2001 the band reunited for one final tour and released a live album entitled "The Eric's Trip Show" on Teenage USA Recordings.

Eric´s trip was one of those bands you couldn´t stop listening to. The extreme lofi made you in love with the music and the lyrics was messed up but in the same time they weren´t. And then it all maid sense! The heavy guitars, pop vocals and the sense for writing awesome melodies is the answer! To bad no one can do it like E.T! We actually recorded a Karaoke version of frame (becuz knowone could sing like rick). And we actually made the sound almost exactly like the original. Those we´re the days!

BlueSkyForJulie/Smother was a track that rocked my world back in the 90's when I bought the SubPop employee of the month record. i believe it was Gunther's.
Awesome.
Might cover it... for no financial gain you understand ;)
