Hello, friends (and future friends). My name is Erik Matthew Hendel. However, you can refer to me as just plain old Erik. I've been playing in bands for about half of my life now (and it is weird to think of it that way). But since my participation in the creativity-with-a-deadline experiment known as the Song-A-Week Podcast, I feel like I'm finally getting the hang of writing consistently good material and I'm definitely honing my chops around the computer as a home studio.
So far, for what you can listen to here, I've done it all by my lonesome. As I write and record new songs and tweak mixes to the existing stuff, you'll be able to hear it all from this page. I hope to finish my first solo album sometime in 2008.
In the meantime, I'll continue rehearsing and playing gigs with my other current projects. A couple of bands are getting off the ground, and as they do, you'll be able to learn more about them on this page. To fill up the rest of my free time, I'll be doing shows here and there that will be just me and a guitar, trying my best to be the perfect combination of all of my favorite artists and different enough that I'll stand out in a way that makes you want to come back and listen to me again.
If you want to know more about the man behind the myth, here are a few FAQ's:
1. How old are you?
I'm 30 presently ... and my birthday is January 29th. (Feel free to send me belated (or early) birthday wishes (or gifts).
2. Where are you from?
I'm from Youngstown, OH, and lived there until I moved to Phoenix, AZ in July 2003. I grew up in Austintown Township (where I attended all of my public schooling), and for college I attended YSU.
3. Do you write your own songs?
Yep ... especially for what you'll hear here, or what you'll hear when I finish my album. Lately it seems there's always a different person in mind when I write songs. Well, not so much the person in general, but one of their defining characteristics or just some interesting thing about them that stands out. If you are interesting (or weird or quirky or whatever) in some way, maybe I'll write a song about you, too.
4. Besides playing music, writing music, and recording music, what do you like to do for fun? What are your interests?
My day job involves a lot of other things I like ... computers, graphic design, websites, photography (including photo manipulation and retouching), some video editing. I also like good beer, a good hamburger, a properly prepared chili dog, and some slow roasted pork. Overall, I generally have fun (or my idea of fun) where ever I'm going.
I guess I'll add some more answers as I think of more questions. Or, just go ahead and ask me if there is anything else you want to know.
