The true musician (by Erik Satie)
He grows in wisdom...He is brilliant...He learns to do without
and is prepared to make great sacrifices...enormous sacrifices...
if I may say...His energy is tremendous...
In other words he is prepared for the struggle...and with honesty he shall fight it...
The performance of an Art demands complete self-denial...
...It was not meant as a joke what I just said...about sacrifices...
The Music makes heavy demands upon those who want to
devote themselves in it...This is what I have wanted you to call your attention to...
A true musician must subordinate himself his Art; ...he must place himself above human suffering; ...he must draw courage from within...and only from within.
I was considered as an outsider, a lone wolf with projects of my own. For example I founded my own church. As a result I valued my privacy very highly and never let anyone see my apartment in Arceuil, where I lived for the last 27 years of my life. I only had one known relationship in my life - an intense love affair in 1893 with the model, painter and former trapeze artiste Suzanne Valadon.
I lived as a true artist, for my music and my ideals. I had no respect for money and lived a poor life for many years. I was never afraid of expressing my true opinion. If I found someone to be a jerk I made this perfectly clear (and took the consequences).
Even though I was a fascinating person in many ways, it is my music that is the major reason for my popularity. I was very creative and had a great influence on my colleagues Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, and Francis Poulenc. Because my music was ahead of my time and regarded as timeless, I also have great influence on many modern composers.
I was a forerunner to minimalism. I experimented with what I called furniture music, meant to be in the background rather than listened to. I composed music to be listened at different angles, similar pieces divided into several parts. Many of my compositions have influences from medieval music and from French composers.
My most famous works are the serene Gymnopédies (three similar piano pieces), the mystical Vexations (short piano piece repeated 840 times), the popular piano suite Trois Morceaux en forme de Poire (duet), the ballet Parade (with some very odd instruments) and the ballet Relâche (with film sequences included).
My music was rather unknown and underrated until the 1960s. My popularity has grown ever since.
About Knole I feel exactly as though I had had for years a liaison with a beautiful woman, who never, from force of circumstances, belonged to me wholly..
Our new album "Herbarium" is
out now on CdBaby (MP3 so far, physical CD is on its way).
Diverse palette of styles (post-rock,
ambient, electronica, trip-hop, with elements of noise, dub,
neoclassic and free improvisation), united by cinematic, slightly
pensive mood.
«Herbarium» is called so
because of heterogeneity of «songs», which can be
compared to miscellaneous leaves in the album, still being belonged
to the family of trees. Trying to avoid non-alive metaphors here,
only thought of diversity and warm and innermost feeling that
herbarium is capable to conjure up. «... This leaf I picked up
in the park where I met her, and this - I sat by the river,
contemplating...». So tracks were created – one was captured
in some magic jam, another – recorded layer by layer and
meticulously mixed then, next – cut from previous sessions and so
on.
All compositions are united by Poostosh
sense of music – mostly pensive, spatial, tender and experimental.
There's a lot of soul and charisma in every leaf... So please let
your soul look over our HERBARIUM.
