Greetings. My name is Erin Weed and I'm a speaker, author, self-defense instructor and Founder/Exec. Director of an organization called Girls Fight Back! I graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1999 with big dreams to move to NYC and become a TV producer. I did this, and was livin' the dream. Then on June 12, 2001 I got a phone call that brought it all crashing down. One of my close friends from college, Shannon McNamara, had been murdered while fighting off an attacker in her apartment.
It's just one of those moments where all of a sudden, so many things seem so irrelevant and so important. For me, working in broadcasting immediately lost its luster. Learning to fight became my main focus, simply because Shannon's murder re-defined my reality of the world we live it...to me, all of a sudden it became a dangerous place.
So fight I did, with some of the best violence prevention experts, threat assessment practitioners, marines, NYPD, FBI, United Nations security squad...you name it. In 2002 I began traveling the nation as a speaker, teaching women how to live safe and empowered lives. I guess I just haven't stopped...not sure I ever will.
My first book is called Girls Fight Back! The College Girl's Guide to Protecting Herself. I am currently working on my second book called Teens Fight Back!
I hope you'll check out the Girls Fight Back website, where you can join for FREE. Membership allows you to find a self-defense class in your area, get our e-news, watch videos, read safety articles, learn about our annual conference and more! http://www.girlsfightback.org/join
Who I'd like to meet: People interested in women's issues, fellow speakers or authors, other organizations striving to end violence in America and abroad.

Dear Erin, I cannot thank you enough for your kind support and friendship! Welcome to our ever growing family of friends. I'm really happy you have decided to become friends of the Wake Up (to child abuse) MySpace Music page. Just by adding us to your friends you have already demonstrated that you have a good heart and are willing to take a step towards ending the hidden suffering of so many.
We also dare to hope you will be able to persuade some of your other MySpace friends to join our just fight against child abuse by adding us to their friends too. The larger our family of friends becomes, the more people we will be able to reach and educate about this terrible ‘disease’ sweeping across the world which blights the lives of more children than you may imagine. Please take a moment to read some of the statistics on child abuse highlighted on our profile and within our blogs. I am sure you will be just as shocked and appalled as we are when you find out the full extent of this scourge.
The innocent children suffering such terrible abuse need all the help they can get. Increased awareness of this foul concealed crime will help to prevent more children living through the agonising torment which I was forced to experience.
I hope you have a great day and look forward to hearing from you soon with your views and comments on this important issue,

erin, i just want to say you rock...you're more cool than any tv producer! i, too, was interested in the "glamorous" world of anything in communications(i was a double major, comm being one), but i dropped all that solely to major in english, and i might do grad work in either counseling/social work/non-profits. life ISN'T glamorous. maybe for the few we read about in gossip mags and see on TV, yes, but the majority live in hard and almost desperate times(it's such irony...just like all the women who feel pressure to look like a supermodel, when genetically the supermodel is the freak of nature...lol...). even the celebs aren't always glam...many are trainwrecks, no different from people i know on probation/parole, doing all the same crap just w/ larger bank accounts..lol.. anyway, i'm rambling as always as my heart breaks and my brain goes off on a million tangents, so just let me say i respect and love what you did. most would take in the news and be like, "bummer, dude..."--only to then go back to living the high life--but the rare few take it in and become crusaders, leaving all semblance of life behind. my hat is off to you, and your lost friend is looking down so proud of you. kudos and well wishes!!!!!!!!
