My name is Joe Longwell, the resophonic guitar(Dobro) is to me one of the most enchanting , beautiful and haunting instruments in the world. I have been playing this type of guitar for about 24yrs. At best ,I hope I can at least ad a small contribution to music world with my style that I play.I don't read music and I have never had a lesson. And I almost never play a song the same way twice. But that's how I like it. Fresh every time I play it. I am a true blue West Virginian mountain boy who loves hillbilly country ,bluegrass music.I think the music in this world is overcome by mainstream corporate music and media , for the quest of the old mighty dollar bill. Corporate America is shoving crap down the worlds throat because of there greed for money and success. My thoughts are to keep the country true and the bluegrass blue. Keep it like that and the music will be timeless. Pop , Hip Hop will fade away but true Country and Bluegrass is here to stay! I love it! I met a cop in Vienna Wv at a friends house who played music.Steve Williams was his name , he was disguised as a cop but he was actually a hillbilly bluegrass picker that just loved to pick old time music. Well he talked me into giving up my old 5$ Harmony guitar and to go buy a Real Martin D-18s Guitar. I was glad I listened to him. Eventually we ended up founding a band called the Run Mountain Boys in Parkersburg Wv back in the early 80's. The band consisted of Steve Williams on mandolin an fiddle, brother Jim Longwell on vocals , Jeff Williamson on Banjo and Jeff Whitlatch on bass. Thanks Steve!!! Well thats when the bluegrass bug bit me. I started playing for Lee Jones in 1985.Lee had an old 1929 National Dobro that he loaned me to learn on and thats when started to play the Dobro.I then played Guitar , Dobro , Banjo and Harmonica with Dusty Jim Baily and the country music jamboree for a few years. It was a variety show in Gettysburg , Pa. That was fun but it got old when you played Tue thru sat 7 to 11pm after you worked your regular job.I played with crazy Lee Jones of DJ and the CB Pickers for 5yrs . Was with Ernie Bradley and the Grassy Ridge Band for 10 yrs. Now I just pick here and there. I do some live studio quality recording , audio and video for Bluegrass bands as a hobby. Mostly for folks I know. I cant stay awat from the music. Its in me , body and soul!
