Krunk is a Philadelphia-based five piece group that presents a new fusion of funk, rock, modern jazz, R&B, and free music. New to the city of Philadelphia, guitarist Frank Velardo met bassist Rob Parks, and began playing together regularly. Shortly after they began playing, Frank and Rob recruited drummer Alex Maio at a jam session. Before long, the trio was developing a sound all their own, performing mostly Frank's original compositions. After two months of experimentation, Rob, Frank and Alex decided to produce a small promotional CD.
The first unexpected addition to Erronious Krunk came as a result of this recording. Saxophonist Tal Shtuhl happened to be practicing in the group's regular rehearsal space, where his unique sound and musicality caught the band's ear. The hitherto trio realized what it was missing, and Tal's extraordinary musicianship and intuition gave the group a profound new dynamic. The addition of his incredible playing and original compositions, brought Erronious Krunk to a new level, and the band took off.
A little over one year later, the addition of vocalist Samantha Rise made the group complete. Although initially Samantha performed only covers, she quickly infused her sound in collaboration with the group on old and new originals. A colorful blend of harmony and texture, Samantha's original lyrics, jazz influence and affinity for improvisation add the finishing touch to Erronious Krunk.
A blend of sophisticated composition and serious groove, Erronious Krunk appeals to musicians and music enthusiasts alike. While the group's recordings are evidence of their musical prowess, live performances are an even more captivating musical experience. An amalgam of musical spontaneity, Krunk's live show engages the audience in a musical conversation unlike any other.
Krunk now plays frequently around Philadelphia, at any one of the city's best venues including Ortlieb’s Jazz Haus, Silk City, Tri-tone bar and the Fire. They have a regular slot at Chris’ Jazz Café’s Sunset Sessions, hosted by Ron T. They were crowned the winners of World Café Live’s “The Best of Philly Rising” for December 2008, Phrequency.com has made several fantastic videos of the group. They have had several exciting write-ups on prominent music websites and have been featured on WRTI’s The Bridge, hosted by Michael J Harrison.
The band is currently in the process of putting together their first complete album.
