ESCO International is the alter-ego of P.Way (Professor Whaley), one of the Bay Area's most respected underground MCs and a founding member of the legendary hip-hop group Bored Stiff. Since 1995, Bored Stiff has shared the stage with hip-hop pioneers such as Gang Starr, KRS-1, Goodie Mob, Black Sheep, De La Soul, Dialated Peoples, Blackalicious, Nas, Andre Nickatina, Living Legends, and Hieroglyphics. Bored Stiff is known as one of the first underground groups to pioneer an alternative to the standard 'gangsta' sound, amassing hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide and write-up's in magazines such as The Source, Vibe, URB, Trasher, 4080, and XXL. Whether teaching hip-hop in schools while on tour, speaking out at Mumia protests, or rocking shows in front of 5,000 fans packed into San Francisco's infamous Martime Hall, P.Way and Bored Stiff have been in the game for nearly 15 years, making good music and a difference in the world.
After leaving the Bay Area for grad school in 2002, P.Way unplugged his microphone, turned on his sampler, and locked himself in the lab, literally. ESCO International emerged, with a signature sound best described as a midnight jam session with Questlove, Fela Kuti, DJ Spinna, Sweet Back, and King Tubby on the mixing boards. A rare gem among artists, ESCO also holds a math degree from U.C. Berkeley and Master's in biomedical engineering from the Mayo Clinic. He can debate the lyrical merits of Big Daddy Kane versus Rakim as easily as he can explain how ultrasound can be used to heal bone fractures. ESCO is truly a sound scientist, quite possibly hip-hop's first. The result is a listening experience destined to put minds and bodies in motion.
