Emily's Interests
General
Most of time I'm interested in doing anything I can EXCEPT schoolwork! I am the queen of procrastination, so I avoid studying whenever I can by getting out and about - seeing live music, hanging out with friends,or checking out a new (to me) neighborhood. I'm always up for a random trip to a museum or exhibit. And of course I can easily be convinced to be a tourist in my own city. I love to eat good food, and there's nothing better than good conversation with a glass of wine. And did I mention that blog addiction I'm currently fighting?
Music
singer/songwriters, indie rock, alternative, alt-country, americana/folk (or lesbian folk, as my friend calls it). Some hip-hop, some old-school country... I'm mostly open-minded.
Movies
um, yes.
Television
Friday Night Lights. 'Nuff said.
Books
Hmmm... there's no way I can do justice to any list of favorite books. So instead, I'll just write what comes to mind and hope I'm not leaving anything too important out!
A Prayer for Owen Meany - John Irving.
Lonesome Dove - Larry McMurtry. We named the family dog Gussie after Gus McCrae. (I told you we are rabid Texans!)
Angle of Repose - William Stegner. Heartbreaking, but inspirational.
This is too hard. I've read a zillion books, and I'm drawing a blank.
Push, by Saphire. loved that book.
Can we go back to childhood? The first book that made me cry - Bridge to Terabithia. Followed by the second book that made me cry - Where the Red Fern Grows. God, I'm a sucker for Little Ann!
I thought of some more. Things Fall Apart, Poisonwood Bible, The Things They Carried, The Handmaid's Tale, The Secret History, Their Eyes Were Watching God, The English Patient..and on and on and on.
oh, how could i forget Jarhead?? :)
About me: I was born and raised in Bryan, America but escaped to Austin, Texas to attend THE University of Texas. Hook 'em! Lived in Austin 13 years until I moved to NYC for a grad school program at Columbia U. Teachers College in August '05. And yes, I'm one of those people who was taught that being a Texan is something to be proud of, so deal with it, y'all.
For some reason, I decided to leave my friends, my job, my house, my car, and my WASHER/DRYER for a 6th floor walk-up in west Harlem. I'm a part-time nanny for a Manhattan family, and an education consultant in two high schools in the Bronx and Queens. I stay busy with work and school, but still manage to have some fun.
Still miss that washer/dryer, though...
Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Emily, happy birthday to you! Have a great day. I love the puppy pic, is it yours? How is everything going? Are you ever going to graduate? And if so are you staying in NYC or coming back home? Love ya, tracy
Hey Emily--Sorry I missed you when you were in town! It was UIL weekend & I was dying. I enjoy reading the awesome blog & living vicariously through you, my hero!!! Hope to see you soon when you come to welcome Cletus. Luv u!
Okay, so I see now that a career in the FBI as a secret spy or witness protection coordinator is really not feasible . . . I am hoping to come to NYC soon, and I would LOVE to get together!!!
Hi Emily! I just realized that you probably have no clue whose site that is! Sorry! It's Kerry Newman - and I'm trying to be all incognito! How are you? How is NYC??
HEY! Miss u very much and wish u were here. I hope that u can make it to my graduation MAY 11, 2007. Where is the Irish guy?? Love u. Hit me up when u get a chance.
Hey did you hear that they are having a Shy-Anne reunion tonight? Apparently all ex-shy-annes get into the game free and they are having dinner for everyone at 5. You are supposed to bring your memorabilia to put on display. Doesnt that make you just want to jump on a flight to Texas? Ha Ha
Hope all is well with you in NY!
