Best Hip-Hop Producer
Es-Nine
He's produced tracks for the likes of KRS-One, Dilated Peoples, Braille and Killah Priest, but that's not why people are talking about Es-Nine. His group, 3 the Hardway, recently released its debut album, Set in Stone, which was entirely produced by Es-Nine and features some of the hardest head-nodding beats to come out of Colorado in some time. But it doesn't stop there: Es is also working on his own solo album as well as projects with Mane Rok and a new solo album from A.V.I.U.S.
Best Hip-Hop Album
3 the Hardway, Set in Stone
Colorado rapper A.V.I.U.S., producer Es-Nine and DJ Cysko Rokwel each had their own thing going .. they came together as 3 the Hardway: Cysko Rokwel was taking out DJs nationwide in the DMC Championships; Es-Nine was producing for local and national artists; and A.V.I.U.S. had just dropped his solid debut album, Patience. But with all three talents combined in one package, you couldn't ask for a more thorough project, from Es-Nine's hard-hitting beats and A.V.I.U.S.'s heart-on-his-sleeve lyrics to Cysko making the DJ essential in hip-hop albums again. If you cop one Colorado hip-hop disc all year, this is the one to get.
The onslaught of the power known as Es Nine first started in 1997 in California, a talented young DJ who transformed his passion for music into the production of his own magic melodies. To hone his talents as a producer, Es Nine attended the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences, isolating his talents in the Arizona desert, looking at the day when his star would shine. In 2003 under the name of Cai One, the early evolution of a musical engineer took form and quickly matured to a new name, Es Nine, and a body of work that would impress the ardent fans of hip hop. Es Nine has produced beats, melodies, and works of art for such prominent names as KRS One, Dilated Peoples, Encore, Killa Priest, Braille, Surreal, and Brown James. In 2005 the time had come to find a stage capable of holding his weight, leading to the creation of “House of Waxx Recordings,” an independent recording label with aspirations of taking the hip hop world by storm
