Emerson Street is a cantankerous path of unruly pavement located in the heart of the student ghetto surrounding McMaster University; but it has created a blossoming story of modern funk music. This is the story of the Emerson Street Rhythm Band. The antecedents of the group go back to August of 2004 when Grayson Roumeliotis met Matt Morgan. The two decided a friendship of music and carousing nights in Hamilton best suited there new life. Jumping ahead one year from that the two moved into the run-down shanty of 229 Emerson Street, a house full of Simpson's quotes and racial slurs. Their next door neighbor Tom Dickenson happened to be a bassist and together they formed the Renowned Groove. The fourth member of this ensemble was an enthusiastic trumpet player named Craig Johnston whom Matt met through playing Lacrosse at McMaster. As the four started jamming at 229 Emerson, the house proved to be too small for their dreams of playing for drunken students around the world. Their chance came when Tom Dickenson's housemate Steph Paradis hooked them up with a gig at the new upcoming bar located just down Emerson Street called the Hub. Every Thursday night proved to be more and more successful as both the bar and the band's recognition grew. The Renowned Groove continued to play at the Hub for the remainder of the school year, and played several gigs for the McMaster Student Union association. However as summer set on, the band took a hiatus, hoping to re-group in the fall. Tom Dickenson left the band to pursue other interests and Craig Johnston's graduation seemed to push more rain clouds into the band's future. It was at this time when Grayson and Matt put out an advertisement for auditions for a new bass player. The man to answer the call of funk was Ali Taiyeb, hailing from Mississauga Ontario a.k.a. (the fifth corner of the earth). Ali's funky eastern bass lines pushed the group to begin a new direction of music and the spirits of Matt, Grayson, Craig, and Ali came to together to form The Emerson Street Rhythm Band. The band decided on a mix of blues, funk, reggae, jazz, and hip-hop style soul. With this mind-set, there would be no music fan left unsatisfied at the end of every show. The group's first show was in November of 2006 at the Hub lounge on Emerson Street. From there they have never looked back. Playing every Friday from January '07 through April '07 was merely the jump-off point for The Emerson Street Rhythm Band and E.S.R.B debuted in the music circuit by playing at the world-renowned Casbah Lounge in downtown Hamilton. The future is bright and shiny for the boys of the Emerson Street Rhythm Band, as they have just cut a demo disc which will be arriving in your hands by the end of summer, 2007. The Emerson Street Rhythm Band is making music history, come be a part of it!
