“ETERNITY” 10th ANNIVERSARY MINI ALBUM
So, ten years – that’s twice as long as The Enterprise was boldly going...
In that time we’ve encountered life forms certainly far weirder than anything Shatner and Co had to deal with, to be honest most of them have been in bands or working as promoters reps.
For me, most of the gigs are all jumbled together into one long instant of volume and Dave’s strobes, while what I really remember are all the other things: Broken pedals, dead swans, tap dancing roadies playing midget saxophones, no clean pants or socks, german highway police searching us for drugs for the umpteenth time, pissing out of your
arse for one week solid after being poisoned by a Viennese hotdog, rescuing the young from the perilous depths of night time in Hamburg, carrying tour buses out of anarchist hippy communes in Scandinavia in desperate attempts just to leave, every single meal we’ve ever been catered (mmm)... Hours of shite films on buses because everyone forgot to bring anything to watch and no one wants to watch any of my highbrow documentaries, all the empty bullshit that representitives of “The Music Industry” have proffered us, all the people that really really matter (of whom almost none work in “The Music Industry”), the fact that when we started people still recorded music on cassettes, almost everyone at MFN -who ruled, the endlessly stocked fridge in The Chapel, the sound of Matt’s floortom at Band On The Wall, watching an ant wander all the way across the stage at Barbarie while we were soundchecking, that party we had in the back of the van between Newcastle and Bavaria, playing tennis with The Captain, descending vulture-like on the scraps of Opeth’s rider everynight with no shame whatsoever , a few self-important arseholes, audience casualties, Tom not changing his trousers for a month, Masterock Studios, Sheldon putting his glasses on when he was really getting juiced up, snow, hail, thunder and monsoon, glorious sunshine, weather so miserable all you can do is stay in bed, so many people that you can’t quite remember their name, sad arguments generally about drugs, tetchiness, fighting, euphoria and happiness, conflict, unity, often disappointment, fleetingly a sense of achievement, mostly just level pegging, doubts, conviction, uncertainty, complete certainty, circumstances being such that you are forced to go for a shit in the woods with a strange kind of annual regularity, strangers who let us stay in their homes, strangers who we invited into our homes, at least 2 proper riots outside our bus, loving music, hating music, the hours and hours and hours and hours and hours of sitting and making things, of rehearsing, of jamming at night, being on the guestlist, not being on the guestlist, wanting to never ever hear that ever again, being skint all the time, all those riffs that we never used, being in the room by myself working at 3 am, on Christmas day, on my birthday, everyday, every year, hating it, loving it, being exhausted, smelling bad, being ill, feeling weak, hands hurting, back aching, being roasting in summer, being freezing in winter, having no smart clothes, having loads of old clothes, being possessed, feeling out of control, being master of your own destiny, completely losing the plot and finally making sense of it all...
Anyway, in honour of all these things, we’ve compiled “ETERNITY” a mini album of the best of our un-released material. These things were never created with any intent other than the love that went into making them and the iressistable urge just to do something. Whether anyone would ever ultimately hear them was never part of their identity, so for me, it’s probably the purist and most untainted Amplifier record. I think the material spans about 1998 – 2003, and we had plans to re-record most of the material at some “future” point, but experience has shown that it’s probably best not to re-record things that have already found their imprint. So saying that, we figured it was better to just put it out.
