Alright guys, This weekend we have some guest instructors in E-town. Dan Christison is coming down with Jake O'brein who is preparing for UFC 100 in July and also his coach Pat McPherson. Pat is fresh from cornering his fighter Chris Lytle in last Saturday's UFC win!! Jake and Pat will only be there on Saturday. Dan is sticking around to teach on Sunday!! Two UFC vets and a guy that has produced several UFC fighters. They are friends of the Academy and we are proud to have them down. Show up and catch some great training. If you can at all make it to class do it. 12 noon on Saturday and 1:30 on Sunday.
Scott Porter, Gay Scott and TJ Barber just got done training at Team Oxendine's in Johnson City, TN last week. Team Ox, much like us, is a grassroots team. They have produced some good guys and they have a different approach than us. They have some great guys to train with and they have some solid Muay Thai, MMA and Jiu-Jitsu going on down there. I encourage anyone interested in training down there to hit it up when possible.
Even though it only looks like a hiking vacation, I believe they did train. Or so I was told!!!
Gay Scott and Nate Jolly in the same pic is too much homo action for me!!! On a side note, Diablo is looking skinnier than ever!!! Further more, I can see TJ Barber's ring worm in the pic
Luiz seminar is awesome!! Stacked house with 20 guys!! Great back attacks!! Thanks to everyone who attended and thanks to Luiz for another great seminar.
Physical Conditioning is a science like any other. As a field of study it is only about 100 years old. The Exercise Industry more than any other is full of people misclaiming and outright lying about equipment and results. Muscle and bodybuilding magazines are the full of misinformation and total bullshit. We are in the fight business. If you notice most of these routines are geared towards metabolic conditioning. The fact is you must be able to repeat near maximum efforts over an extended time. Strength and power endurance is the name of the game. The guy who concentrates on absolute strength may develop an incredible bench press or even something more functional like a squat. However, his cardiovascular system will not support his power output for prolonged time without the proper conditioning. In other words, we have to repeat near maximum strength efforts while under extreme cardiovascular and cardiorespiratory stress. Additionally, these guys are not mindlessly banging and flipping tires until they are tired. They are on a designed program with exact protocal. Most of these protocals are supported by research. Some are supported by trial and error.
Considerations include: strengths and weaknesses based on baseline tests. injury rehabilitation General physical prepardness (crossfit has proven that increasing your general fitness even when not sport related will increase your capacity to perfom well in your sport)
For example, research has shown that the tabata interval of 20 seconds of max work followed by 10 seconds rest elicits the best results. Also important to note is the recent craze over core strength. Core strength is great. But if your core is capable of exerting force your extremities (arms and legs) cannot handle then your weakness had become "mission critical" and you will become injured or unable to perform maximally.
Another fallacy is the "sport specific" conditioning model. Some people think that if they emphasis the movements and muscles that are specific to their sport that their performance will increase. This is wrong and dangerous. In most cases these are the muscles and movements that have been overdeveloped and are causing imbalances. Not to mention further use of them could lead to overuse problems such as overtraining syndrom. A routine should be balanced and train full compound movements not isolation of muscles or specific movements.
What do all great fighters in the combat sports have in common? None and I mean none of them go to the "big box globo" gym and sit on a machine and do an isolation workout from the latest Musclemag.

We had 3 fighters do battle in Kings Mountain on June 6th. Gay Scott Fremming won via triangle armbar. He looked impressive and easily transitioned through dominate positions and moved from sub to sub. He received submission of the night honors. TJ Barber took on an undefeated Wendell Hurless. Wendall was 5-0 coming in and proved to be game. Barber dominated the striking and positions but Wendal constantly attacked the legs, neck and arms. TJ finally caught his back in the 3rd round and sunk in the mata leao and passed Wendall completely out. Chad Deener took on the well established and always tough Bobby Carter for the Hardrock MMA Light Heavyweight Title!! I think to most people's surprise Chad was content to stand and strike. Both exchanged strikes throughout the fight. Carter appeared to fatique and Deener started to impose his game. In round 3 Deener was able to land a hard blow and finish the fight. Deener brings the title home! The atmosphere was electric and I think it was one of the most exciting fights in awhile. 3-0 on the night. All 3 fighters fought hard and showed their great preparation. Deener is in a new generation of BeatDown Fighters that enjoy striking as much as grappling and have really worked hard to become proficient strikers. Contrary to what many may think, we have some of the most well rounded fighters in the region. Our Bread n Butter will always be BJJ but our striking and wrestling will be on point as well. Thanks to kickboxing instructor Cliff Levan and wrestling instructor Rob Mooney.
Come on Guys. My favorite poet Too Short said it right years ago. "You Can't Turn A Hoe Into A Housewife." Hey Captain Save-A-Hoe, Don't save her she don't wanna be saved!!!
