Evan's Interests
|
| General | Well, I like having fun. (Seriously, I never understand why people put that in their profiles; who doesn't like having fun? Unless that's a Secret Code for something, in which case, maybe I better explain that I use "having fun" to mean "engaging in activities that I find enjoyable." Like spending time with friends, talking or playing games, or devoting my attention to one or more of the following:
80s music, aclu, agnosticism, alexander technique, anthropology, art, ask dr. eldritch, astronomy, atheism, backpacking, bioluminescence, black adder, books, buffy the vampire slayer, camping, cats, cephalopods, cinema, civil liberties, classical music, creative writing, csi, cultural history, dave barry, dilbert, discworld, douglas adams, dr. eldritch, eckankar, eddie izzard, equality, fanfiction, fantasy, felines, fiction, film, greek mythology, harry potter, hiking, human rights, humanism, humor, humorous fantasy, imagination, intelligence, internet, justice, kevan and boont, kittens, lewis and clark college, libraries, lost, marriage equality, monty python, movies, nanoedmo, nanowrimo, neil gaiman, neuroscience, octopus, oregon, organization, paleontology, penguins, philosophy, photography, plays, politics, portland, psychology, reading, reading aloud, robert asprin, robocup, robots, satire, science fiction, scott adams, screenplays, solitude, south park, squid, star gazing, technology, terry pratchett, the northwest, theater, unitarian universalism, veronica mars, walking, webcomics, writing, zarquon, zone diet.) | | Movies | I like a lot of different types of movies (I even review movies! You can read them here.), but my favorites are Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Comedy. Like Princess Bride, Blazing Saddles, Tremors, Stripes, Star Wars, and Galaxy Quest. Of course, I like a good Thriller, but it's harder to find ones that surprise me (I've seen a LOT of movies). Not much into Horror though. Or Musicals. | | Television | Veronica Mars! (Sadly, it's gone away.) Also CSI, Medium, and House. | | Books | Pretty much anything by Terry Pratchett. I'm fond of humorous SF&F, so I also enjoy Douglas Adams and Robert Asprin. For non-fiction, I'm reading "The Well-Fed Writer", and "How to Write A Damn Good Novel". |

About me:
Have you ever yelled at a movie character when they did something really stupid? Or gotten tired of cinematic cliches, like how scientific experiments are always going Horribly Wrong? I certainly have, and that's what got me started writing satirical advice for superheroes, evil villains, monsters and ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.
AskDrEldrtich.com launched in 2003 as a weekly advice column. Each letter was posted on the site and sent out as a free Newsletter to subscribers, which also includes the Tip of The Week and the unique Horoscope of Mystery!
The popularity of Ask Dr. Eldritch jumped in September of 2005, when the webcomic launched. Since I'm a better writer than artist, it's a photocomic style, where action figures are photographed and placed into a digital world of strange creatures and odd events. Set in Portland, Oregon, the story revolves around Dr. Eldritch and his friends in a mysterious mansion that has a random portal to other dimensions and a Troll in the basement. Episodes are posted on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
While this effort takes up much of my time, I'm also working on my third novel, second screenplay, and a variety of other writing projects. You can see samples of my movie reviews, the journal of my year in Alaska and other writings at EvanNichols.com. And I work at a bookstore a little, too.
HERE'S A SAMPLE FROM THE COMIC:

Who I'd like to meet:
People who like my webcomic. Writers. People with a sense of humor. Scientists. Artists. Dancers. People who know when to use the word "felicitations." Models who don't take themselves too seriously. Actors. People with something interesting to say. Engineers, Inventors and Roboticists. Explorers. Homebodies. People who are Strange and Unusual, but not just to be cool.
