Hello, my name is Eva and I’m an alcoholic.
Not really.
Let me see. I spend a lot of my time working in a café bar on Newland Avenue in Hull, which is okay. One day a week I work as archivist (glorified filing) in the Webster Fragment Collection, a private collection housed in a top secret location (the basement) at the University of Hull. This is the best job in the world, seriously. The pay is lousy though.
Here's the good bit: Our collection consists mostly of found parts of a massive and as yet incomplete book which we call Bookzer0 (do you like the 0 instead of the o? me neither, but I don’t have any say in these things and anyway, you learn quite quickly not to change anything around here, just in case…). A heavily abridged version of Bookzer0 was published earlier this year under another name.
To cut a very long story very short, lots of material was left out because there’s another (much bigger) collection of Bookzer0 fragments in London and the owner doesn’t like to share, even more was left out because Mr Webster who owns our collection, and Mr Hall who owns the other one, disagree on the validity of some of the fragments which are in the public domain, and even more was removed when the book was edited as a more conventional work of fiction (by Bookzer0 standards!).
If I can get permission (I’m pushing it already), I’ll tell you the whole story sometime. It’s quite a good one.
UPDATE: I now have Mr Webster’s kind permission to put a small sample of our collection online, you’ll find it in my pics. You’ll see the album is called set 1. That’s because we are constantly on the look-out for new fragments and I’m hoping I’ll be able to include any finds I make here in a public space, so that everyone can enjoy them. I say enjoy. Lots of this stuff is confusing, encrypted of conflicting. But I’m a bit like that too so it’s all good.
What else? I play tennis and don’t go out with found object collectors so stop asking.
