About me:

WHO ARE WE?

EVAW is a groundbreaking campaign representing 7 million individuals and organisations across the UK. Almost half of women in England and Wales experience domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking over their lifetime. We believe we CAN and MUST create a world free from the threat and reality of violence against women.

WHAT DO WE WANT?

We are putting pressure on the UK Government to honour our international obligations and develop a national strategy to end violence against women.

WHY A NATIONAL STRATEGY?

Violence against women is a huge and persistent problem, which needs immediate action

  • 1 in 8 young men think it’s ok to hit a woman if she’s been ‘nagging’
  • There are now only 37 Rape Crisis centres in England - half the number there were in the 1980s
Good work is being done on specific forms of violence, such as the introduction of domestic violence courts and Sexual Assault Referral Centres. But this just isn’t enough.
  • Services for victims are facing a FUNDING CRISIS
  • Work is often PATCHY and disconnected
  • Resources are focused on mopping up after violence, rather than PREVENTING it.
We are holding Government to account in our annual report Making the Grade? It shows that the lack of a coherent strategy on violence against women undermines the good work being done.

LONDONERS!

I must admit I'm feeling a bit ignorant about this - but I had no idea until this morning that Green mayoral candidate Sian Berry supports
the 'New Zealand' model of decriminalising the abuse of women through prostitution - under the guise of making it all nice and safe and clean.

http://london. greenparty. org. uk/news/626

I thought I'd post this here just in case there are other Londoners
out there who were planning on voting Green but hadn't realised this was one of their policies!

Incidentally, Ken Livingstone has also given his 'second vote' to the
Green Party, so it might be worth examining his own policies on the
matter as well.

Cheers,

Deks xxxx

Hi - thanks for the ad. This is a great campaign, and good to see so many big organisations working together on this issue. I'll be running the Liverpool Hydroactive Women's Challenge in September in support of Refuge, one of End Violence Against Women's members - if anyone wants to sponsor me it's easy via http://www.justgiving.com/sarahrosalind

This is so worth while, having worked in this area as a Social worker for the last 8 months (with women who have experienced DV) - so much more needs to be in place for them.
