Evergreen Dazed formed in Leicester, England in 1991. since then they have built a small but dedicated following of their dreamy guitar pop sound.
Their first album ‘Cloudbeams In Your Eye’ (CBBMLP3) was released in Oct 1992. It features acoustic pop in the style of The Sundays or Mazzy Star, electronic ambient pieces, and echo-laden space rock. They played a couple of gigs in San Francisco, supporting an embryonic Richard Buckner, and bay area folk rock goddess Sonya hunter. They secured a feature article in UK psych magazine Ptolemaic Terrascope, and an entry in Chris William’s book of underground bands ‘Adrift In The Ether’. This drew the attention of Spanish indie-pop label Elefant, resulting in a 7” EP ‘Ocean Beach’, in 1994, and appearances on a couple of label compilations in the mid 1990’s.
After a short hiatus when the band moved to the USA, they spent 1997-98 recording songs which would eventally show up as, ‘The AM Sounds Of Evergreen Dazed’, however finances dictated that they couldn't release it at the time. Also in July that year they played their first full band gig at The Bottom Of The Hill in SF, with genial Jeff Wachhorst on bass and Roland supplying the beats.
Three tracks from these sessions wound up on the very ltd (make that 100 copies) Compromise EP released in 2000, none of which appeared on the subsequent archive release of ' The AM sounds ....' in 2005.
The band then spent 3 years writing and recording what would be their secondly released album. ‘Broken Road’, came out in Nov 2003, again on their own label (CBBCD13). This CD highlights their love of classic 60’s sunshine pop, early 70’s singer-songwriters, and 80’s indie-pop. The eleven tracks run the gamut from the simple acoustic guitar of ‘Le Petit Ange’, to the funky Fender-Rhodes driven ‘Nothing but Dry Land’, and the pop-rock of ‘Sorry Little Heart’. This release garnered praise and comparisons to Richard and Linda Thompson in their heyday.
Actually having some money meant they could go back to the 'AM sounds' songs, and put it out as an archive release. This they duly did in Nov 2005 (CBBCD23). Featuring 12 tracks and running to 55 minutes, this release is a mellower and more downbeat affair than the first album, and links to the past and pointers to the future are can easily be derived. Stylistically the album swings from the first track ‘September’ with it’s slide guitar and ancient drum machine, all the way through to the final track, ‘The Last Dream’, a psychedelic smorgasbord of backward guitars, distant feedback, and organ.
Winter 2006 saw the tracks from the first album remixed along with a bunch of outtakes.
The next couple of years saw sporadic recording due to Mark's personal circumstances (getting divorced), but out of this, a new album is beginning to emerge. This special release contains no electronic elements of any kind. All sounds are natural instruments. and while it's fair to say it's acoustic, don't get the idea that it's EvDaz unplugged. With it's layered 3 or 4 part harmonies, the album pays homage to the groups love of sixties light pop and vocal groups such as, The Singers Unlimited, or The Millennium (EvDaz was honoured to share the stage with the late Lee Mallory from that group in early 2004), as well as west coast folk rock. The Voice Of The Valley will transport you back to April 1965 when Sandy Koufax still pitched for the Dodgers, and everybody but NASA was going to the moon. Watch out 2010 .... cuz it feels like it's 1965 again (with apologies to Jeremy G.)
They have been playing live as a duo since 1992, and have performed in the Bay Area, playing venues such as the Hotel Utah, Brainwash, and the Starry Plough.
The band always record at home in their own Evergreen Studios, using analog 4 and 8 track machines. This brings a homegrown flavor to their music sadly lacking in much of today's sterile product.
As well as performing in Evergreen Dazed, Elizabeth works with Luxo100, an excellent trippy band incorporating Latin rhythms and beatboxes, and Mark performs experimental rock and electronica as NashSpaceRocket. Check out the links below.
Both CD's are available from cdbaby http://www.cdbaby.com/all/evergreendazed.
