EVIL WINGS rock story Gli EVIL WINGS nascono ufficialmente nel 1989 ma il loro vero debutto è datato 1994 quando rilasciano il loro primo ed omonimo Cd per la Underground Symphony. Il disco, una riuscita combinazione fra melodie progressive e partiture metal estremamente tecniche, riceve da subito una caldissima accoglienza, merito soprattutto delle eccellenti recensioni sulla stampa specializzata internazionale; il gruppo comincia nel frattempo la promozione Live, prendendo parte a vari Festival e suonando in numerosi concerti. Grazie all'originale miscela fra teatralità e tecnica che il gruppo propone nei propri Live shows, gli EVIL WINGS assurgono allo status di band di culto tra gli appassionati della corrente più progressiva del Metal, riuscendo a crearsi un notevole seguito di fans. Nell'estate del 1996 esce l'atteso secondo capitolo denominato "Brightleaf" che sposta la direzione musicale della Band su territori più vicini ad un certo Hard Rock, pur mantenendo l' inconfondibile marchio Progressive. Compositivamente mai statici, gli EVIL WINGS, durante la seguente intensa attività Live, gettano le basi per quello che viene ad essere il nuovo corso musicale, orientato su coordinate leggermente differenti rispetto ai precedenti lavori. Nel 1998 inizia il sodalizio tra la neonata Adrenaline Records ed il gruppo lombardo. La band incide dapprima una cover di "A Fortune In Lies" dei Dream Theater, canzone che apre il doppio CD "Voices. A Tribute to Dream Theater"; le reazioni di Mike Portnoy, batterista del famosissimo gruppo americano, sono entusiaste. Nel mese di Marzo gli EVIL WINGS entrano finalmente in sala di registrazione per incidere il loro terzo capitolo, "Colors Of The New World". La band sposta il tiro della propria musica, e, pur conservando sempre una forte componente progressive ed un orecchio puntato verso le classiche sonorità Seventies, cerca un approccio più melodico nella costruzione delle canzoni. Brani quali "Colors Of The New World", "Flowers" e "Searchin'" avvicinano gli EVIL WINGS a formazioni storiche quali RUSH, TRIUMPH e KING'S X; la tecnica (sempre in grande misura presente) è messa completamente al servizio della melodia. "Colors Of The New World" mostra una band capace di competere sullo stesso terreno con i grandi gruppi d'oltreoceano ed apre la strada ad un nuovo modo di concepire la musica. A dicembre del 2000 entrano in studio per la registrazione del quarto disco dal titolo "Kite" che esce a gennaio del 2001, dove vengono abbandonati i lati più progressivi per dar spazio a sonorità hard e heavy. Ad aprile del 2002 viene registrato il concerto tenuto al Teatro Cenacolo Francescano di Lecco che uscirà per la Horizons/Comet Records. Uscirà un doppio cd (cd+dvd) con presentazione di Mike Varney della Magnacarta Records (produttore di grandi artisti quali Malmsteen e molti progetti con i più grossi nomi del progressive) e Beppe Riva (giornalista di importanti testate musicali italiane). A settembre 2011 l'atteso ritorno degli EVIL WINGS con un cd tutto nuovo dal titolo KALEIDOSCOPE, una produzione che renderà labile il confine fra progressive music e il classico hard-rock. ___________________________________ Evil Wings was first formed in 1989 but their homonymous debut-cd came out in 1994 on the label Underground Symphony. The record, an intriguing blend of progressive melodies and technically sophisticated metal riffs, was very successful, thanks especially to the great reviews it got in the specialized magazines worldwide. Meanwhile, the band began doing live shows, appearing at several festival and concerts. Thanks to their original mix of showmanship and technique, perfected during live shows, Evil Wings achieved cult status among fans of prog metal, acquiring numerous enthusiastic followers. The eagerly-awaited second opus, entitled "Brightleaf", was released in the summer of '96. The band's music was moving towards a more hard-rock style but still remaining true to its progressive roots. In 1998, the Italian band began its relationship with the newly-formed Adrenaline Records. First, the band cut a cover of "A Fortune In Lies" which leads off the double cd "Voices - A Tribute to Dream Theater". Mike Portnoy, the drummer of the world-famous American band, is enthusiastic of the result. In September 1999 finally their third release titled "Colors Of The New World" is out. The band shifts gears, musically, and while still reflecting their progressive origins and the classic '70s sound, the song structure becomes more melodic. With pieces like "Colors Of The New World", "Flowers" and "Searchin'", Evil Wings ranks up there with classic bands such as RUSH, TRIUMPH and KING's X. Technical bravura (though far from absent) is now used to support the melody. With the new album "Kite", out shortly after the Summer 2001, the incredible mix among melody, musical technique and strong songwriting went further. "Kite" saw the band evolving towards a "harder" and "heavier" sound, leaving the most progressive side behind. On April 2002 the great concert at Cenacolo Francescano Theatre in Lecco was recorded and released on the Horizons/Comet Records label. The double cd (cd + dvd) boasts an introduction by Mike Varney of Magnacarta Records (producer of big artists as Malmsteen and creator of many projects featuring the biggest names in progressive rock) and by Beppe Riva (journalist for several important Italian music magazines). In September 2011, EVIL WINGS' long-awaited brand new cd will be released. "Kaleidoscope" marks this long-awaited return with a production that will make the line between progressive music and classic hard-rock a very thin one.
