Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, and current Sacramento
resident, Jon Marino A.K.A. Evolve discovered the profound, eclectic
sounds of Drum and Bass in the late 90’s. Already rooted in music
production and creation ranging from Hip Hop to Grunge and Metal, Jon
adapted to the sounds of Drum and Bass rather easily, as he noticed
immediately that many of the same elements could be found in this genre
of music. Like many others, Jon’s first experience with Drum and Bass came by referral from a very close friend who offered to show him the
Sacramento underground Drum and Bass scene, and more notably, a
recurrent event and crew known as “916 Junglist.” In his own words,
“The connection (to Drum and Bass) was really truly an awakening, like
a breath of fresh air. I had never heard music so perfectly tuned to my
personality, that mashed up everything that I love (about music) in
such an eye-opening way.” During this period, Jon formed a friendship
with “916 Junglist” forefather, Billy Lane. Billy offered his knowledge
of the business and its workings, and in time, offered Jon a place in
the notorious “916 Junglist” crew. Shortly thereafter, he landed his first residency at a local night known as “Naughty Vibes.” Already a reputable name in the Sacramento Drum and Bass scene, “Naughty Vibes” front man, DJ Rif, noticed value in his tight, crisp mixes, and overall different approach to presenting Drum and Bass music to the masses. During this residency, Evolve met fellow DJs “59 Crime” and “Jason B”, who in October of 2004 formed “Drop Heavy,” one of Sacramento’s most respected Drum and Bass crews. For the next 3 years, “Drop Heavy” promoted many of the most legendary events in Sacramento’s Drum and Bass history, featuring such DJs and producers as Klute, Breakage, Rohan, Gremlinz, Outrage, Skitty,
Fracture, Gein, R.A.W., Juju, Echo, Method One, Red Army, Angelzero,
Chris Inperspective, and TZA. Looking to the future, Evolve continues to push himself forward musically, adding Dubstep to his repertoire and beginning a production career. Additionally, he has formed “Corrosive,”
which while still in it’s infantile stages, is already causing ripples
in the Sacramento Drum and Bass scene.
