Ruslan Karaoglanov, was born on December 31st, 1984 in Azerbaijan Baku. Ruslan’s mother, is Russian and his father is full Armenian. In the late 1980’s, a Holy war began between the Azerbaijan Muslims and the Armenian Christians. Due to this Holy war, Ruslan and his family had to flee Azerbaijan and come to America as refugees. They arrived in East San Diego when Ruslan was six years old. Once in America, Ruslan was exposed to Hip-Hop and fell in love with the culture and artform. After a couple of months in America, Ruslan’s parent’s separated, forcing his mother to go on Welfare for five years and also drove her into a deep depression. After those five years of poverty, Ruslan’s mother found work. Ruslan got into legal trouble at a young age and thus, in 1998, Ruslan and his mother moved to a suburb in the North County area of San Diego, Vista California.
In Vista he took an interest in basketball and started his freshmen year in High School. Friends began telling Ruslan that he had talent as a Rapper from hearing him freestyle around campus and told him to pursue it. Hip-Hop was a growing passion and he knew that he would never get tired of the culture or creating music. The next year his mother decided to invest in Ruslan’s hobby and purchased him a computer that he turned into a home studio and began to record demos. Later that year Ruslan linked up with Omar Underwood (Afaar) and they went on to form Thoughts Aloud. In 2002 Ruslan and Afaar met California legendary Hip-Hop crew Future Shock. The two developed a relationship with the Hip-Hop vets who had been active in the California Hip-Hop community since 1992. Future Shock was impressed with Ruslan’s desire to learn and grow as a musician and invested time into his development as an artist.
In 2003 Ruslan met producer Brandon Bornes (Name Brand) and the two instantly began to work on music together, they started Eye Am productions and produced Ruslan’s first album “Out of Order”. After the release of "Out of Order" and Afaar's "No more Top Ramen" Thoughts Aloud went their seperate ways. In 2006 Ruslan formed a super group called theBREAX with DJ Beleaf Melanin, Drummer Mic B, and producer Name Brand. After developing relationships with Collective Purpose and other well established artist in the San Diego area, theBREAX quickly exploded on the Southern California Hip-Hop and Spoken Word scene and took it by storm with incredible performances, becoming crowd favorites at Elevated, San Diego’s largest open mic venues.
Ruslan hopes to make theBREAX a household name in the Hip-Hop community. His diverse sound, organic production, and refreshing song concepts filled substance will take theBREAX and Ruslan to the fore front of the Indy and mainstream music scene. Ruslan has separated himself from Hip-Hop cliché’s and delivers a powerful message of hope and faith with a balance of originality and familiarity to his art. His mission is to be relevant, influence those of who have influence, and break out of the box of societies norms.
In 2007 Legendary Hip-Hop Record Label, Rawkus Records (responsible for helping discover artist like Eminem, Talib Kweli, and Mos Def) declared theBREAX on of the next 50 important Hip-Hop groups. Rawkus 50 also launched a campaign to bring attention to this next generation of Hip-Hop which has helped Ruslan and theBREAX gain international attention in the music world.
