There’s something about Eyes Caught Fire that feels reminiscent of both a childhood dream and a bizarre Sci-Fi fantasy. The quintet orchestrates noise rock, over circular, explosive drums and a haunting blend of strophic keys and tasteful bass melodies. It blends the ambience of shoegaze, nearly reckless with distortion at times, with dynamic changes from waltz to trip-hop to rock. Lead by sad and shimmering female vocals and narrative lyrics, their sound is a swirl of aggression and surrealism. It blends bits of intellect with the emotional and swallows the ear.
Eyes Caught Fire released their first full album, Felix Culpa, in 2004. The album concentrates on themes of light and dark, holding an unapologetic fascination with death and release through in its lush choruses and heavy moods. The group’s unusual sound developed as they spent their musical adolescence together in the Colorado Springs. The asymmetrical influence of Colorado’s lush landscape and conservative religious and military atmosphere arguably seeps into the nature of their music. There is an interesting tension between beauty and aggression that help create the apocalyptic atmosphere heard on their first album, Felix Culpa. Eyes Caught Fire promoted this album playing shows with The Appleseed Cast, The Velvet Teen, Chin Up Chin Up, and local favorites Against Tomorrow's Sky and Laymen Terms. They were awarded Best Live Band amongst peers in the local art community.
After almost a year off in 2006 the band returns with a brighter more otherworldly sound, speckled with colorful effects and driving momentum. While maintaining the music’s previous “immensity,” its drama is more fantasy-driven. The newer material feels playful and escapist, surreal as opposed to somber and unravels in a series of songs as the soundtrack to an abstract child’s tale. They reentered the Colorado Independent scene playing shows with touring acts such as Black Moth Super Rainbow and Vast. Their music and intimate performance stir up the interest and empathy of listeners and invites them into an intriguing realm. Eyes Caught Fire is currently finishing a five song release “The Chantepleur EP” before working on their second album and touring in May 2008.

[…] Eyes Caught Fire, local wonders whose self-produced CD, Felix Culpa, is oddly epic and David Lynche-like. Opening with the syrupy-slow ‘Circle Peg, Square Hole,’ the album has enough guitar crunch to satisfy any rock ‘n’ roll sweet tooth. The layered, hazy sounds create a sonic wall vaguely reminiscent of old Cure albums and early 90’s shoegazer bands like My Bloody Valentine and The Swirlies, but with a far more daring and reassured lead vocalist.

Dusky, spectral, electrifying atmospheres and emotional sound cycles make this Colorado Springs quintet one of the most compelling and artistically satisfying acts in our fair state or any other.
