they started as five, got tighter as three, and now, charlotte’s favorite hip hop collective, eyes of the elders, is celebrating a head count of ten.
running wild since 2004, everything is now under one tent in the eyes of the elders circus. uncle fox and bearcat continue to lead the cause with contortions of verbal sorcery. the imperial penguin and the brutal badger keep it tight and funky in the rhythm section. boss on guitar, grandpappy ‘powercords’ longlegs on keys, and gypsy on violin, are three mad cooks seasoning and spicing a melodic delight that would force chef morimoto to accept defeat. the secret ingredients are your ears and the space between, and they cook it with hints of southern rock, folk, bluegrass, classical, celtic, gospel, blues, and kickass. babylung, boss, panda, and turtle provide vocals, commentary and poetry with enough diversity to fill an old wooden ship.
to say this menagerie of musical mystery is like nothing you’ve heard before is not quite accurate. songs like little sister and immaculate flame sound like they come from an age before sound. their live shows suspend time, leaving you guessing if you are in church or in outer space, and in the end deciding you are simply remembering your future.
