I started reading young, my parents kept all manner of books around. I loved the childhood fairy tails and read most of the old versions of Grimm and Anderson as a child. I read Dickens and Twain and Stevenson. I loved the boyhood tails of adventure and was never a fan of the Disney versions. In Jr high I started reading military history and fiction. The Guadalcanal Diaries, Run Silent Run Deep, All Quiet On The Western Front, The Red Badge of Courage (which as far as I know is still required reading in grade school). Somewhere in this time I came upon the Science Fiction genre.
Being from a military family and moving around from base to base most of my life books became my friends in many ways. I had brothers as well to fight and play with but the worlds of great novels and the outrageous ideas that came from fantasy and science fiction fascinated me and gave me an escape.
I read all the old guys early, Verne and Burroughs and Wells. In the 1970's they reprinted all of Edgar Rice Burrough's fantasy books with very sharp Frank Frazetta covers. There were many other great artists working in that genre at the time but Frazetta's work really caught my attention. It's his work that got me interested in art, before that I was in music, mostly horns. I played every horn and woodwind at one time or another trying them all out. The vivid imagery and colors of Frazetta's work inspired me and I began to seriously learn how to draw. Before that I had drawn quite a bit anyway but never thought about being an artist until around 9th grade when I dropped band for good and put all my energy into art.
If it was Science Fiction I inhaled every book I could get my hands on. From Heinlein, Asimov and Clark to Daley, Gibson and, yes, even Jordan.
When I returned to school to study art in college, I got bored with my evenings and started looking for something to do. I did my share of partying too, but I decided to audition for a play, Arsenic and Old Lace. I loved the Carey Grant movie and thought it would be something different to do. I got a bit part and it kind of grew from there to where I added Theatre as a second major and continued that after I got my BA in Fine Art. At this point I read almost nothing but play scripts for the next 4 or 5 years. Shakespeare and Mollier of course, Ibsen and so many names I can't remember them all. Some very well known and some rather obscure. Hundreds of scripts. Many of my friends from this time are either in the theatre business or went off to Hollywood. I know one of the Survivor Africa cast, several others have been in comercials and shows. I ran into one while I was submitting a set design for a version of The Tempest in an off off off Broadway theatre. He was there to look at running and designing the lights for the show.
I guess what I am trying to say is books are good, read everything you can get your hands on, although I stay away from commercial best sellers and political tell-alls. Go for something with some literary potential at least. | | Heroes | Pablo Picasso is my hero.

Ezell Studio's Blurbs |
About me:
I am a sculptor, painter, performer. I started out as a science fiction and fantasy illustrator. I toured the convention circuit for several years selling and showing my work. I managed to get a few things published and even got hung in the Delaware Museum of Art. After awhile I grew as an artist and started doing sculpture in stone and metal. The funny thing about sculpture is you can take the same fantasy subject and do it in stone and it becomes classical art rather than genre art.
In all of my work there is subliminal text and images. Many artists put subliminal messages into their works especially 2 dimensional work. This isn't that new to the art world, and everyone knows it's illegal to use in television and movie advertising, but it's used in print advertising all of the time. The surrealists called it automatic writing and tried to strip away the paintings down to just the written texts and the abstract expressionists still do it. The problem with that is that it is no longer subliminal, beneath the awareness. It becomes in your face and loses it's power.

Who I'd like to meet:
Ms. Paris Hilton (Why not?), Marisa Tomei (I think I saw her on the subway in Manhattan awhile back. I'm afraid I stared like a country rube.), Frank Gehry who was one of the artists in the Ferus Gallery art movement in the late 50s and 60s in L.A. and is now a world renowned architect.
Robert Lynn Asprin, whom I have met and enjoyed a good weekend of drinking laughing and talking about fencing, art and writing, recently passed and will be missed.
