Interests

  • Music

I listen to a LOT of music, a LOT of the time... I love bluebeat, ska, dub, reggae, soul, funk, hip hop, R&B, disco and house. (I usually play a lot of disco, house and breaks at gigs, though I always try to sneak in a bit of everything else!)

According to a quick look at my record collection and iTunes library, I also like...808 State, ABBA, Dennis Alcapone, Ashford & Simpson, A Tribe Called Quest, Roy Ayers, Afrika Bambaataa, The Beastie Boys, The Beatles, Blondie, Bonde Do Role, Boney M, Booker T & The MGs, David Bowie, James Brown, Bugz In The Attic, Kate Bush, Cerrone, Kerri Chandler, The Chemical Brothers, Chic, The Clash, Jimmy Cliff, George Clinton, Coldcut, The Count Of Monte Cristal, Crookers, Daft Punk, Fred Deakin, Desmond Dekker, De La Soul, Depeche Mode, Dilemn, Dimitri From Paris, Diplo, DJ Format, Coxsone Dodd, Ella Fitzgerald, Eric B & Rakim, Evil Nine, Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin, Adam Freeland, Funkadelic, Goldfrapp, Grandmaster Flash, Al Green, Donny Hathaway, Isaac Hayes, Headman, Larry Heard, The Herbaliser, Lauryn Hill, Billie Holiday, David Holmes, Hot Chip, Norman Jay, Jazzy Jeff, Marshall Jefferson, Grace Jones, Quincy Jones, Jungle Brothers, Edu K, Kelis, Chaka Khan, King Jammy, King Tubby, Gladys Knight, Frankie Knuckles, Kool & The Gang, Kraftwerk, Krafty Kuts, Patti LaBelle, Byron Lee, Leftfield, Lemon Jelly, Larry Levan, Madonna, Annie Mac, David Mancuso, Bob Marley, Michael Mayer, Curtis Mayfield, Mekon, The Meters, M.I.A., Missy Elliott, Joni Mitchell, Giorgio Moroder, Mr Scruff, MSTRKRFT, Mylo, The Nextmen, Nifty, Annie Nightingale, The Orb, Maceo Parker, Parliament, Peaches, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Gilles Peterson, Plump DJs, Stuart Price, Prince, Prince Paul, Professor Longhair, Public Enemy, Radioclit, Otis Redding, The Rolling Stones, Roxy Music, Rufus & Chaka, Run DMC, Roxanne Shante, Simian Mobile Disco, Nina Simone, Sinden, The Skatalites, Sly & Robbie, Sly & The Family Stone, Patti Smith, Soulwax, Phil Spector, Dusty Springfield, Stanton Warriors, The Staple Singers, Riva Starr, The Sugarhill Gang, Donna Summer, Switch, Sylvester, Talking Heads, The Temptations, Harry Thumann, Tiga, Toots & The Maytals, Touche, Ike & Tina Turner, Ultramagnetic MCs, U-Roy, Luke Vibert, Visage, Fred Wesley, Amy Winehouse, Stevie Wonder, Wu-Tang Clan, Yazoo, and Neil Young.

Festival favourites include Dreadzone, Mungo's Hi Fi, Samba Ya Bamba, Shlomo and Transglobal Underground. I'm also partial to a bit of loud drum 'n' bass in a muddy field.

  • Books

My all-time favourite book since I was in bunches is 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee - I tend to re-read it every couple of years, and I still love it - I think this book, combined with regular viewing of 'Cagney & Lacey', instilled my moral values as a nipper.

I don't read as much as I should, but I'll give anything a go if a friend recommends it... I don't have a library card, but I do have a good friend called Brian who lends me stuff all the time and doesn't charge late fees. Favourites from Bri include James Ellroy stuff (particularly 'My Dark Places') and oddities like 'A Confederacy of Dunces' (by John Kennedy Toole). Left to my own devices, the kind of books I buy for myself are usually about music, and New York disco culture in particular - I think this may explain my growing collection of mirorballs.

In the last six months I've read 'Love Saves the Day: A History of American Dance Music Culture, 1970-1979' by Tim Lawrence, 'Turn The Beat Around: The Secret History of Disco' by Peter Shapiro (recommended), 'Kraftwerk: I Was a Robot' by Wolfgang Flur, 'Nowhere to Run: The Story of Soul Music' by Gerri Hirshey (another of Bri's titles) and 'Adventures on the Wheels of Steel: The Rise of the Superstar DJs' by Dave Haslam (recommended). I'm about to start 'Everybody Dance: Chic and the Politics of Disco' by Daryl Easlea - plus I'm looking for a good book about the history of Jamaican music culture, if anyone can recommend one...?

My absolute favourite music book, which also has the best and most entertaining analysis of New York disco and its' roots that I've read, is 'Last Night a DJ Saved My Life: The History of the Disc Jockey' by Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton - truly fabulous work!

Hi Latest massive release on iBreaks BASS Here we have the 5th issue of iBreaks Bass, welcoming onboard to MKM & GBX with this their first release under the iBreaks group…. And what a package…!! Surely this is the biggest, bassier, heavier, dancier release on the label so far with 2 ultra-large-full-fat enormous bass rollers. “I Don’t think So” could prove one of the biggest tracks of 2008, and is one of those straight to the point full on Breakbeat mayhem, with no time to rest and just huge elements loaded with a ridiculous amount of energy and power. This track scared the hell out of us the first time we played it loud after being offered to us from the Brazilian duo… is heavy!!! “Xtra Xtra” is by no means the little brother of “I Don’t Think So”. The energy levels are also well up to the top, although this time with a bit of a techier approach to the huge amounts of sub bass… As a whole what we believe is the biggest release under the label, and one of the most powerful on iBreaks over all.. General Midi: Loving This.... Proper Fuckin Breakbeat!! Far Too Loud: Big Tunes, I Dont Think So Gettin Full Support from us!! Available @ Beatport, Breakbeatonline, Juno, Trackitdown and others... Check them out on www. ibreaks. co. uk

knowing that you do love your old skool.. kill two birds with one stone and come along...

We have these rather natty chaps guest at eotmc this month. Who'd have thought Edinburgh could sound so old school.

    ..
    Straight Back On It

    ..

My favourite tune isn't this one but "Super Pop" which blends electo synth with their old school hip hop sound.
    Have a listen via http://www. myspace. com/youngfathers

Plus the 31st July sees the return to eotmc of Billy Electroluv in his new guise http://www. myspace. com/theparaffins , so It should be a goody.
