About me:

AVAILABLE FOR NATIONWIDE TOURING!!!

FACES OF AMERICA is the nationally recognized one person show that deals with issues of diversity by presenting 8 characters, male & female each of a different ethnicity, all American. Audiences are spellbound by the stories (all based on true accounts) and the ability of one actor to portray each one with sensitivity and humor. FACES OF AMERICA has enjoyed over 500 performances in almost every state.

Created by Colin Cox & Fran de Leon, FACES is perfect for any event, especially diversity/ethnic celebrations, HR meetings, conferences, orientation, convocation, community events, fundraisers and any other time you want to entertain and enlighten your population.

Originally performed by Fran de Leon, FACES tours with several different solo performers across the country, enabling us to have more flexible dates to suit your schedule.

FACES tells the stories of:
•a "Happa" (Japanese-Hungarian) who begins to understand her heritage through her grandfather's story of immigration and subsequent internment in the Japanese American war camps
•a young Latino seeks to challenge the stereotypes of coming from the barrio
•an East Indian American woman whose hope of living in a caste-free society is shattered by an on-campus hate crime
•an African-American man discusses the corollation of racism and socio-economics
•a young liberal white male fights against his father's bigotry and the notion of racism being a white disease
•a Filipina-American doctor learns the impact of patience and religious faith
•"Fuzzy", a mixed-blood, lesbian American whose revolutionary ideas will change the way you think and feel forever!

TO THE DEATH OF MY OWN FAMILY, by David L. Meth, is coming back to the city after a two week tour through four cities in India: Chennai, Bangalore, Pondicherry and Mumbai, where we had to turn away theater-goers and nearly had a riot. So we decided to do an unplanned, second performance. It was standing-room-only and standing ovations throughout the tour. Therefore, I would like to invite all to visit my web site where you can take a tour, see a slide show, and read comments from the Indian press, including Time Out Mumbai:

Please join us to see Farah Bala's mesmerizing performance in a one-woman show with 15 characters in an intensely dramatic non-linear drama directed by Drama Guild Member Peter Ratray, veteran of Broadway, Off-Broadway, TV and film.

TO THE DEATH OF MY OWN FAMILY is the story of an Afghan-American woman who returns to Afghanistan to help her father escape and witnesses the slaughter of her entire family. She then has to justify her journey and reclaim her citizenship during an interrogation when she returns to the United States.

The Abrons Arts Center at the Henry Street Settlement

i love this program, and i love what you do. it's amazing.
the other day, i was talking to my friend kyle about the presentation, and he tends to use a lot of racial slurs and things... just trying to be funny, of course, but things that could get him into alot of trouble somewhere else. he told me that it was a real eye-opener, and that he's way more careful about what he says and how he acts around certain people. to me, that was definite proof that it all had been worth it because at least one mind had been changed.
my question to you is this: in what ways can i get involved? i'm very passionate about all human rights issues (especially the 1994 Rwandan genocide, i could write a book) and i want to put it all to good use. i love the fact that you use acting to spread the word, you're quite good (to put it mildly). i enjoy acting, singing, playing guitar, writing music, and performing overall. is there an organization or something of that nature where i could use those things to send a message to my peers? if you know of any like Faces of America that are in the Portland area, i would like to check 'em out!
thanks,
-Kelsey
