About me:
Hello & Welcome to this dedicated webpage to create fairness in football....the myspace aspect of the site is run by me, Dave Brown. Its purpose is to give you direct information and also a place to leave your messages from the main site! The Website is ran by John Firkins (manager) who has designed the new look website and added the information for you to view! My contribution is the logo designer and assistant manager....so please feel free to leave us both a comment! This page will be updated on a regular basis as and when information is available but for more information on our views go to our website!!!!
Thanks to Jon for this feature he used for his uni coarse:
Didier Zakora and Ronaldo fans beware. A new website has been set up campaigning to bring fairness back into our game. Fed up with divers? Annoyed at timewasters?
Then head to www.fairness-in-football.eu to register your support in favour of stamping out moves like the Zakora dive or the Ronaldo roll/wink/scream-for-effect.
Website editor John Firkins says the website was set up minutes after the Portugal V England World Cup Semi-Final, “after that match I turned my frustration into something that hopefully could produce an outcome in the long term. I simply can’t come to terms with the fact that cheating seems to be accepted. I sat down as football fan hoping to improve the game.”
One of the site aims is to see 10,000 people sign up to a section of the website called “Wall of Discontent.” When the 10,000 is achieved, a banner will be produced (approximately 15 metres length and width) with the aim for it to be visible at every League ground, just like an advertisement hoarding. “Numbers and awareness of the ‘Wall of Discontent’ are the priority,” says Firkins, “ and names seem to dribble in to me every day as the word spreads about the site. The site will expand quite heavily but keeping things simple for the time being is a must. At the moment a number of independent fans forums are asking for partnerships. There is one partnership that might benefit the site more than the others but I am insisting the site remains solely for the purpose of the cause.”
We all know referee’s have a tough job, as we saw with Graham “3 yellows” Poll in the World Cup, and the website, Firkins insists, is solely to criticise the players and not the officials, he says, “These guys really do become scapegoats. These guys are picked on more than certain players as if they are the real cheats. The majority of sensible fans know that it is the players who make a referees job ten times harder than it should be.”
Firkins is also adamant that the website isn’t pushing bodies such as The FA or FIFA to implement any rule changes, “The project is insistent that players need to realise that they embarrass themselves in front of millions of people when they cheat. The players are the ones who need to change. Rules shouldn’t be needed, just a change in attitude that cheating is okay.”
Most football supporters can stomach it if the opposition has been the better team on the day. When your team loses through an act of cheating though, it becomes a much more bitter pill to swallow. Firkins however, refrains from pointing out individuals who are the main culprits, “I do not wish to go down an avenue of certain players becoming scapegoats. Fans all arguing each week about certain players and the website endorsing it means that the project could come under fierce criticism from players and agents. The project is a fair one appealing for fairness in football. Fans need to be fair too.”
Another quirky section of the website is Fred The Footballer, a satirical look at what a player might think before diving or play-acting. “He remembers the days he used to roll during nursery on the grassy green. How sadly scary, that such skills can be used to good use when your already earning 20k+ a week,” Is a section from Fred’s Rolling School for example. Says Firkins, “Fred has been designed for a number of reasons. The first because, as I’ve said, we do not want to name particular footballers. The second is to be able to show in schools exactly want we see real footballers do on a regular basis.”
So where next for the campaign then? “The project as a whole is a sensible light hearted one, which should be taken at face value,” says Firkins. “No money is being made by myself or David Brown (co-editor), nobody is being told things have to change or else there will be punishments. The message is exactly what is written at the bottom of the wall. Players must look at themselves and understand fans are fed up of being taken for a ride. Cheating ruins football and fans see it too often in my opinion. Whether the site is a success or not at least fans can say we tried.”
