"The Catcher in the Rye," "Things Fall Apart," "The Good Society (R.I.P. J.K. Galbraith)" "The Bluest Eye," "Bitchfest" (a shameless plug - my sister has a great essay in the book on being a black feminist metalhead).
Heroes
I don't have "heroes" because all humans have flaws and that's too much pressure and expectation to put on one person. However, people I admire: Tutu, Paul Robeson, all of the unsung sisters of the civil rights movement-especially Ella Baker and Daisy Bates, Sean Penn (who frequently risks damaging his career to stand up for what's right), everyone who helped and continue to help Hurricane Katrina victims, same for those who risked/gave their lives on 9/11, my mother and grandmother.
About me: I'm an independent filmmaker tackling both narrative and documentary films. My heart is in New York, but for now I'm based in Chicago. I'm making films that challenges the status quo and tells stories that you won't see or hear from anyone else. And I refuse to be boxed in by race or gender. Free your mind, and the rest will follow...
My new documentary is called "Silent Choices" and it's about abortion and its impact on the lives of African American women.
"Silent Choices" is now on sale as an educational DVD from New Day Films! To order, go to www.newday.com/films/SilentChoices.html or call 888-367-9154.
Who I'd like to meet: Short list: Archbishop Desmond Tutu, any member of Radiohead, Stephen Colbert, Kiefer Sutherland.
Short list of people I want to meet and work with: Sean Penn, Kate Winslet, Oliver Stone, Andre Braugher, Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, Cate Blanchett
